RedHawks Down Cardinals 7-4

MUNCIE, Ind. – On Friday evening the Miami University softball team defeated Ball State University 7-4 in eight innings. The RedHawks improve to 25-16 (14-1 Mid-American Conference). The Cardinals drop to 24-11 (9-5 MAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the top of the first, Mckenna Campbell hit a two-RBI single that allowed Jenna Golembiewski and Chloe Parks to cross home and take a 2-0 lead for the RedHawks.
  • A RBI single in the bottom of the third allowed a run to cross for the Cardinals, cutting the lead in half 2-1.
  • In the top of the fourth, Sydney Gilbert scored on a fielder's choice hit by Ella Carter to up the lead to 3-1. 
  • Kaylee Oh followed that up with a sac fly that allowed Madie Patton to score and increase the lead to 4-1.
  • The Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI triple and a RBI single to shorten the gap to 4-3.
  • A throwing error allowed the Cardinals to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. The RedHawks held this score through the end of the inning to send the game into extras.
  • In the top of the eighth, Carter took the lead back for the 'Hawks with a three-RBI home run over center field. Patton and Campbell also scored to make it a 7-4 game.
  • The RedHawks held this advantage through the end of the inning to take the 7-4 victory.
 
NOTES:
  • Shelby Kunkel went 2-for-4 at the plate. Campbell went 3-for-4.
  • Parks went 2-for-5 with two doubles. She also surpassed 50 hits on the season (51).
  • Carter had four RBI on the day.
  • Six RedHawks had hits in the game.
  • Madilyn Reeves pitched the complete game, striking out three, and giving up just seven hits.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks conclude their series with the Cardinals tomorrow, April 12 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. in Muncie, Ind.
