OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawks edged out the Kent State Golden Flashes Friday, putting up five runs in the first inning and holding on for a 5-4 victory. Keenan Proctor recorded his first official hit as a RedHawk, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The RedHawks improve to 18-15 (13-3 MAC) with the win while the Golden Flashes fall to 20-12 (10-3 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Cooper Katskee started on the mound for Miami in the top of the first and managed three quick outs, recording one groundout, striking out one batter and catching another stealing.
Miami broke the game open in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs. Dillon Baker led off with a double to the left-field corner, and an HBP and a walk put Ty Batusich and Anthony Zarlingo aboard to load the bases. Evan Appelwick hit a sac fly to drive in the go-ahead run. Ryan Novak hit a sac fly to extend the lead to 2-0. Dominic Krupisnki doubled to right-center, sending Zarlingo home for a 3-0 lead, and Proctor recorded his first hit in his first ever start for Miami, a single to right field, to make it 5-0 through one inning.
Kent State scored two runs of their own in the top of the second, hitting a two-run homer to make it 5-2.
Kent State added one more in the fourth, scoring on an error by Miami. They cut the deficit to one in the top of the sixth, scoring after a triple and a sac fly to make it 5-4.
Carson Byers pitched three scoreless innings to earn the save and seal off a 5-4 win for Miami.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:

Baker went 2-for-4 with a run.
Batusich went 1-for-2 with a run and a walk.
Krupinski went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Proctor went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Katskee pitched 6.0 innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs while recording six strikeouts.
Byers pitched 3.0 innings, giving up two hits and holding Kent State scoreless.

UP NEXT: Game two of Miami's series versus Kent State is scheduled for tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. Game three is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
