OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 16/16 St. Cloud State Friday night at Steve "Coach" Cady Arena.
John Waldron had a goal and an assist for the RedHawks (7-18-2, 1-15-1 NCHC), while
Raimonds Vitolins added a power-play goal. Jack Peart had three points to lead the Huskies (13-9-5, 9-4-4 NCHC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 15:38 1st (SCSU 1-0) | Peart opened the scoring for the visitors with a one-timer late in the first period. Cooper Wylie sent the puck in near the goalpost to get the play started, and after Bruno Bruveris deflected it away, Nick Portz recovered and skated it around behind the net. He ultimately found Peart on the far side for a quick finish.
- 17:35 1st (SCSU 2-0) | Zach Okabe doubled the margin with a power-play goal two minutes later. Peart and Verner Miettinen exchanged several passes at the top of the Huskies' offensive zone before Peart finally connected with Okabe in close for the shot to make it 2-0.
- 2:23 2nd (Miami 2-1) | Vitolins cut the lead to 2-1 on a power-play goal early in the second period. Vitolins, John Waldron and Matthew Barbolini combined on a nifty sequence of passes to quickly cover the length of the ice, and a trailing Vitolins capitalized to get the RedHawks on the board.
- 13:18 2nd (SCSU 3-1) | Dylan Anhorn upped the St. Cloud lead to 3-1 in the middle stanza on a close-range give-and-go with Veeti Miettinen. Anhorn initially received the puck from Verner Miettinen, who provided the secondary assist.
- 0:13 3rd (Miami 3-2) | Waldron scored on the first shift of the third period to pull the RedHawks within a goal, knocking home a rebound after PJ Fletcher fired a shot off SCSU goaltender Dominic Basse. Rihards Simanovičs also earned an assist on the play.
- 3:27 3rd (SCSU 4-2) | Barrett Hall widened the margin to 4-2 with a spinning shot in the middle of the zone off passes from Peart and Veeti Miettinen.
- 4:17 3rd (SCSU 5-2) | With an extra attacker on the ice due to a delayed penalty, SCSU extended its lead less than a minute later. Tynan Ewart dropped a pass off to a cutting Okabe along the side boards, and Okabe sent a feed across to Wylie near the far post for a tap-in to give the visitors a 5-2 advantage.
