
RedHawks Take Two in Doubleheader Against KSU

OXFORD, Ohio--Â The Miami University baseball team swept a doubleheader against the Kent State University Golden Flashes by the scores of 12-3 and 5-4 Saturday, claiming game two in 10 innings. The RedHawks improved to 13-28 (9-11 MAC) while the Golden Flashes drop to 26-12 (12-5 MAC)
Game one was an offensive explosion for the RedHawks. Miami poured on the runs early and never looked back.
In game two, the Flashes took an early lead. Both teams kept it close throughout the game, with Miami chipping away with every run the Flashes scored. The RedHawks tied it up in the ninth and took it to extras. With one crack of the bat, the 'Hawks claimed the win in the 10th on a walk-off home run by Ryland Zaborowski, his second of the day and 16th of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

The RedHawks got the offense started quickly in the bottom of the first. Benji Brokemond led off with a single to center field. Cooper Weiss quickly followed up with a home run to right center to get the Red and White on the board first, making it 2-0 RedHawks.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Weiss reached base via walk. David Novak singled up the middle. Zaborowski received the second walk of the inning, loading the bases. With two outs in the inning, Brian Zapp was hit by pitch, which pushed a run across home plate. Zach MacDonald reached on an error, scoring Novak. With the bases still loaded, Dillon Baker singled to left field to score the final two runs of the inning, making it 6-0 RedHawks.

In the top of the fourth, the Golden Flashes got on the board, scoring two unearned runs and making it 6-2 RedHawks.

In the top of the fifth, KSU tacked on one more run, making it 6-3 RedHawks.

Brokemond led off the bottom of the sixth with a single through the left side. After stealing second, Brokemond advanced to third on a throwing error. Weiss followed up with a single to left field to score Brokemond. Novak reached base next, after being hit by pitch. With two on, Zapp hit a double to bring both runners around and make it 9-3 RedHawks.

In the bottom of the eighth, Weiss led off with a walk. Weiss stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Novak reached on the second walk of the inning. Billy Kopicki grounded out, scoring Weiss. Zaborowski stepped up to the plate and powered one out of the park for the final runs of the game, making it 12-3 RedHawks.

Weiss went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two walks and one home run.

Zaborowski recorded his 15th home run of the season.Â

Connor Oliver allowed one earned run and struck out seven in seven innings of work to pick up the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

The Golden Flashes struck first, scoring in the top of the second inning to make it 1-0 Golden Flashes.

Miami answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Baker led off the inning with a triple to right field. Appelwick grounded out, scoring Baker and making it 1-1.

In the top of the third, KSU took the lead back with an RBI single, making it 2-1 Flashes.

KSU tacked on another run in the top of the fourth, making it 3-1 Flashes on a solo homer.Â

In the top of the sixth, Kent State added another solo shot to take a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Zaborowski led off with a double to left field. After advancing to third from a groundout and flyout, Zaborowski scored on a single up the middle from Zapp, making it 4-2 Flashes.

The RedHawks continued to chip away in the bottom of the seventh. Tommy Harrison led off with a double to left center. Weiss followed up with a single to third base. Novak flew out to left field to score Harrison and make it 4-3 Flashes.

In the bottom of the ninth, Harrison homered down the right field line to pull Miami even at 4-4.

In extras, Zaborowski cranked one out of the park in the 10th inning to give the home team a 5-4 walk-off victory and a doubleheader sweep.

Kenten Egbert recorded 12 strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Zach Maxey threw four scoreless innings in relief to pick up the victory.

           The RedHawks play the series finale against Kent State University Sunday, April 23rd. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. in Oxford.
