RedHawks Fall Short to Buckeyes

OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University baseball team fell to the Ohio State University Buckeyes with a final score of 12-11 Tuesday. The RedHawks drop to 11-28 (7-11 MAC). The Buckeyes are now 19-17 (3-9 B1G).

Ryland Zaborowski led the Miami offense with a grand slam, his 14th home run of the year.


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • OSU kicked things off quickly by scoring one run in the top of the first, making it 1-0 Buckeyes.

  • With one out in the bottom of the second inning, Nate Stone tripled down the right field line. Dillon Baker followed up with a single to the shortstop, scoring Stone and putting the 'Hawks on the board 1-1 after two innings of work.

  • In the top of the third, the Buckeyes scored twice to take a 3-1 lead.

  • In the bottom half of the inning, Benji Brokemond claimed his spot on first after being hit by pitch. Brokemond advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a balk. David Novak followed up with a single to right field, scoring Brokemond. Zach MacDonald singled to left field. Stone reached base via walk to load the bases. Zaborowski powered one out of the park and wiped the bases clean with a grand slam to center field. After Baker walked, Tommy Harrison doubled to left center to tack on the final run for the inning, making it 7-3 RedHawks.

  • The Buckeyes answered in the top of the fourth inning with a six-run rally, making it 9-7 Buckeyes.

  • In the bottom of the fifth, Zaborowski led off with a single to left field. Harrison doubled to left center, putting runners on second and third. Cooper Weiss reached base via walk, loading the bases for Novak. Novak singled through the left side, scoring Zaborowski and making it 9-8 Buckeyes.

  • OSU tacked on two more in the top of the seventh inning, making it 11-8 Buckeyes. 

  • In the bottom half of the inning, Brokemond reached on a fielder's choice. After two failed pickoff attempts, Brokemond advanced two bases. Brokemond quickly scored from third on a wild pitch to inch the RedHawks closer and make it 11-9 Buckeyes.

  • In the top of the eighth, the Buckeyes added another insurance run, making it 12-9 OSU.

  • In the bottom half of the eighth, Evan Appelwick singled up the middle. Stone followed up with a walk. Baker bunted for a single to load the bases. Harrison reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Appelwick. Brokemond and Weiss reached base with back-to-back walks, forcing one more run across home plate, making it 12-11 Buckeyes, which would prove to be the final score.


MIAMI GAME NOTES

  • Novak went 4-for-6 with two RBI.

  • The RedHawks' pitching staff recorded 14 strikeouts in their effort.
