Miami Explodes in Third Period for 5-2 Win at FSU

Chris Bergeron earns his 200th career win as a college head coach

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The Miami University hockey team scored four third-period goals and raced past Ferris State 5-2 Sunday night. Five different players scored for the RedHawks (1-1-0), who gave Chris Bergeron his 200th career win as a college head coach. Logan Neaton stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced from the Bulldogs (1-1-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 9:32 1st (Miami 1-0) | Max Dukovac gave Miami the lead midway through the first period. After a takeaway by William Hallén in the corner, Hallén and Artur Turansky combined to put pressure on Ferris State goaltender Noah Giesbrecht with a flurry of shots. Dukovac came up with the puck in front and made a nice move to work free of a defender and put the RedHawks up 1-0.
  • 13:20 2nd (Ferris State 1-1) | FSU pulled even at 1-1 in the second period, as Luigi Benincasa held the puck in to set up a shot attempt by Connor McGrath from a tough angle. McGrath managed to sneak the puck just under the crossbar to tie the game.
  • 3:42 3rd (Miami 2-1) | It took less than four minutes in the final period for the Red and White to break the deadlock for good. Brayden Morrison exchanged a pair of passes with Jack Clement to free up the Miami captain for a long-range blast from the left point that made it 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
  • 4:50 3rd (Miami 3-1) | Frankie Carogioiello got on the scoresheet for the second consecutive night, firing in what proved to be the game-winning goal just over a minute later.  Zane Demsey connected with Ryan Sullivan on a perfect pass ahead to the blue line, and Sullivan laid a feed off to Carogioiello on the left wing. He skated past FSU's Jack Mesic and proceeded to hammer one past Giesbrecht.
  • 10:02 3rd (Ferris State 3-2) | Miami survived a 5-on-3 power play for the Bulldogs in the middle of the third period, but FSU converted 5-on-4 to pull within a goal. Zach Faremouth finished the play off assists from Kaleb Ergang and Travis Shoudy.
  • 13:03 3rd (Miami 4-2) | The RedHawks responded, courtesy of Dylan Moulton. Off a pass from Turansky, he ripped a high-quality shot that was denied, but Hallén kept the puck alive in front of the net. Hallén stayed with the play after getting a shot saved at close range and flipped the puck back out to Moulton, who did the rest.
  • 16:00 3rd (Miami 5-2) | Playing 4-on-4, Matthew Barbolini added some breathing room late by stealing a cross-ice pass in his own zone and starting a 3-on-1 for John Waldron up the right wing. Barbolini got the puck back from Waldron at the other end and scored Miami's final goal of the weekend for a 5-2 cushion.
