10/11/2023 2:55:00 PM | Hockey
Miami welcomes Canisius to Steve "Coach" Cady Arena this weekend for the RedHawks' home opener. Miami is 1-1-0 after a weekend split at Ferris State. The Red and White scored three first-period goals to begin the season but fell 5-4 in overtime Saturday night after FSU tallied an extra-attacker goal with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. The RedHawks bounced back with a four-goal third period on Sunday to give Chris Bergeron his 200th career victory as a college head coach, defeating the Bulldogs 5-2. Canisius beat Niagara 5-2 in an exhibition Sunday afternoon, but the upcoming series in Oxford will be the Golden Griffins' first regular-season action.
This weekend's games are set for Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14, with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m. both nights. The games can be streamed on NCHC.tv, with Miami's radio broadcast airing on MiamiRedHawks.com. Greg Waddell (play-by-play) and Drew Davis (analyst) will have the call.
The RedHawks posted a road sweep at Canisius last October to remain perfect all-time against the Golden Griffins. Miami's 5-3 and 2-0 wins in Buffalo (Oct. 21-22, 2022) moved the RedHawks' series record to 8-0-0. Miami has won all six meetings between the programs in Oxford, most recently a series in November 2013.
The Red and White put up nine goals last weekend, with Matthew Barbolini (2-1-3) and Frankie Carogioiello (2-0-2) lighting the lamp both nights. Artur Turansky chipped in a team-best three assists in the series. Logan Neaton went the distance in net, as the Winnipeg Jets draftee posted a .903 save % and 3.37 GAA during the two games in Big Rapids and claimed the second win of his career.
Carogioiello and head coach Chris Bergeron met with the media this week to preview the matchup against Canisius.
