RedHawks Split Doubleheader at Kent State

KENT, Ohio--Â The Miami University baseball team split a doubleheader at Kent State Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks move to 17-22 (12-14 MAC), while the Golden Flashes are now 14-20 (9-12 MAC).

           In game one, the RedHawks won 4-3 behind strong pitching and timely hitting. Zach Maxey threw six innings, striking out 11 while allowing just one earned run. Patrick Mastrian IV struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, picking up the save.

           In game two, the RedHawks fell 10-9 to the Flashes in 10 innings. Cole Andrews and David Novak led the way at the plate with three RBI each, while Stephen Krause went 3-for-5 with two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One
- In the bottom of the second, Kent State scored three runs, taking a 3-0 lead.
- In the top of the sixth, trailing 3-0, William Escala led off with a single. Nick Neibauer then slugged a two-run homer to right field, cutting the KSU lead to one.
- In the top of the seventh, trailing by one, Krause doubled down the right field line. Easton Good came in to pinch run for Krause and scored on a Parker Lester double. Novak walked, then JJ Woolwine came in to pinch run. Woolwine scored the go-ahead run on a Brian Zapp triple to give Miami a 4-3 advantage.

- Zapp went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and an RBI.
- Neibauer hit his second home run of the year.
- Mastrian IV picked up his fourth save of the season.
- Maxey picked up his second win of the season, lowering his ERA to 2.37, the third-best mark in the MAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two
- In the top of the first, Brokemond led off with a double down the right field line. Later in the inning Andrews doubled to right-center, scoring Brokemond. Andrews then scored on a Krause RBI single.
- In the top of the third, with the game tied at two, Zach MacDonald reached on an error. Andrews followed with a RBI single to drive him in.
- In the top of the sixth, trailing 7-3, Lester doubled down the right field line. In the next at-bat, Novak belted his first career home run to left-center field, bringing the RedHawks within two.
- In the top of the eighth, trailing 8-5, MacDonald led off with a single, then stole second base. Later in the inning, Krause drove in MacDonald with an RBI single, cutting the Kent State lead to two. Krause moved to third base on a Lester base hit, then came in to score on a Novak RBI single. Zapp drove in Lester, tying up the game at eight.
- In the top of the ninth, tied at eight, Neibauer led off with a single, followed by a Brokemond double and an intentional walk of MacDonald. Andrews drove in Neibauer with a sacrifice fly, putting the RedHawks up 9-8.
- Kent State responded with a run in the ninth and one more in the 10th to end the game.

- Novak finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, a homer and a run scored.
- Brokemond went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored.
- Andrews went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
- Lester went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
