RedHawks Host Lamar in Home Opener Saturday

SATURDAY'S GAME: Fresh off a 72-69 win at defending ACC Tournament Champion Georgia Tech on Tuesday, Miami hosts its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 13 when the RedHawks entertain Lamar University at 2 p.m. in Millett Hall. The RedHawks are 93-23 in home openers, posting an 81-67 win against North Dakota last season.

ABOUT LAMAR: The Cardinals opened the season with a 67-50 win against Wiley College on Tuesday. Jordyn Adams led the team with 15 points, followed by Kasen Harrison with 13 points and eight assists. Lamar is coming off a 10-18 record and 6-10 Southland Conference mark in 2020-21. The Cardinals advanced to the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament last season.

THE SERIES WITH THE CARDINALS: Saturday is the first meeting between Miami and Lamar.

OPENING NIGHT: Miami opened its 117th season on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Georgia Tech with a 72-69 win. Miami is now 77-40 (.658) in season-openers, winning its second straight lid-lifter. The RedHawks improved to 17-25 when opening the season on the road.

UP NEXT: Miami continues a four-game home stretch when the RedHawks host Stetson at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17.

TELEVISION: Saturday's game will be aired on ESPN3. Steve Baker and Randy Hollowell will call the action.

ROARING 20s: Senior guard Mekhi Lairy burst out of the gates with a 23-point effort at Georgia Tech on Nov. 9. Lairy was 9-of-19 from the field, knocking down three triples and going 2-for-3 from the free-throw line. It was one off his career high and tied a career-high for field goals.

CHART CLIMBER: Senior forward Dalonte Brown became the 37th member of Miami's 1,000 Point Club last season and enters 2021-22 with 1,241 points to rank 20th all time. He is two points away from moving into 19th on the list and 15 from the No. 18 total of 1,256. Brown also needs to play in just one more game to crack Miami's career top-10 list and is seven appearances away from tying the all-time record of 126. He also has made 112 starts to rank seventh all-time and is six away from Ron Harper's record of 118 career starts.

1,000 POINT WATCH: Entering the RedHawks' next game with 779 career points, senior guard Mekhi Lairy could become the 38th member of the 1,000 Point Club. Lairy, is coming off a 23-point performance at Georgia Tech in Miami's opener and averaged 12.8 points during his junior campaign. He would need to average 7.4 ppg to hit the mark by the end of the regular season.

GRANT NAMED PRESEASON ALL-MAC: Coming off a season where he was selected to the All-MAC Third Team, junior guard Dae Dae Grant was selected as a Preseason Second-Team All-MAC honoree in 2021-22.

VETERAN NUMBERS: Miami's 12 returners boast a great deal of experience in a Miami uniform. Entering the 2021-22 season, the dozen combine to play in 640 Miami games, making 181 combined career starts and playing a monstrous 11,795 minutes during their time as RedHawks. Leading the way are seniors Dalonte Brown (118 games, 111 starts, 2,835 minutes), Isaiah Coleman-Lands (93 games, 7 starts, 2,094 minutes), Mekhi Lairy (87 games, 37 starts, 1,910 minutes), Precious Ayah (93 games, 12 starts, 930 minutes) and Elijah McNamara (84 games, 21 starts, 991 minutes), and juniors Dae Dae Grant (55 games, 52 starts, 1,405 minutes) and Myja White (51 games, 33 starts, 941 minutes). *Numbers all prior to start of 2021-22 season.

  • Senior forward Precious Ayah is closing in on the century mark for games played, entering the season having played in 94.
  • Miami returners accounted for 97.1 percent of Miami's scoring and 94.7 percent of its scoring from a season ago.
  • A point of emphasis for the RedHawks is having a low number of turnovers, and the team got off to a good start in its opener on Tuesday. Miami had eight turnovers against Georgia Tech, while forcing 14 turnovers. Last season, Miami averaged 11.0 turnovers per game and committed fewer turnovers than its opponent in 14 of its 23 games and had the same number in four games last season.

ROAD STREAKS: After its 72-69 win at Georgia Tech on Tuesday, Miami extended its road win streak to five-straight dating back to the 2020-21 season. Last year, MU captured a 69-64 win at Northern Illinois (Feb. 20), a 96-54 win at Central Michigan (Feb. 23), a 74-66 win at Western Michigan (Feb. 25) and an 84-79 overtime win at Bowling Green on Mar. 2 last season. It was the first time since 2008-09 Miami had won four-straight road games. The RedHawks were 5-6 in road contests last season.
