RedHawks to Host Falcons at 5:30 p.m. Thursday

THURSDAY'S GAME: In the second of a three-game stretch over five days, Miami hosts Bowling Green at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21 in a makeup game from a previously postponed match-up. 

ABOUT BOWLING GREEN: The Falcons enter Thursday's game with a 10-4 mark and a 6-2 MAC record. BGSU won its first five MAC games, but has lost two of its last three, including a 69-57 loss at Akron on Jan. 19. Bowling Green has four players, averaging double figures in scoring, paced by Justin Turner's 20.4 ppg. Turner also dishes out 5.4 apg. Daeqwon Plowden follows at 11.6 ppg and a team-leading 8.7 rpg. Trey Diggs and Kaden Metheny follow at 10.9 and 10.0 ppg, respectively.

THE SERIES WITH THE FALCONS: Thursday marks the 145th meeting between Miami and Bowling Green with the RedHawks holding an 86-58 lead in the series. When playing in Oxford, Miami is 49-18 against the Falcons. The RedHawks have won three of the last four meetings with the Falcons, including a 73-55 triumph on in Oxford on Feb. 29, 2020 in the last meeting between the teams. BGSU captured a 78-76 win against Miami on Jan. 7 in Bowling Green last season. The Falcons' last win in Oxford was on Jan. 16, 2018, 81-70.

TELEVISION: Thursday's game will be carried live on ESPN3. Steve Baker and Randy Hollowell will call the action.

COLEMAN-LANDS RANKS EIGHTH NATIONALLY IN ASSIST/TURNOVER RATIO: Redshirt junior guard Isaiah Coleman-Lands has been stingy with turnovers and currently boasts a 4.50 assist/turnover ratio with 27 assists to a mere six turnovers through nine games. He leads the MAC and ranks eighth nationally in assist/turnover ratio.

REDHAWKS LEAD MAC IN FEWEST TURNOVERS: Averaging 10.1 turnovers per game, Miami leads the MAC in fewest turnovers and ranks eighth nationally. Miami has committed fewer turnovers than its opponent in seven of its nine games and the same number in one game this season. 

MIAMI TO HONOR EMBRY: Wayne Embry '58, a standout at Miami from 1954-58 who broke down racial barriers, is a basketball icon. In honor of Embry's impressive career as a collegiate and professional basketball player, his pioneering example as a professional basketball executive and his significant leadership contributions to the university, Miami will erect a statue capturing his likeness and signature hook shot that will be prominently displayed at the Millett Hall entrance. A scholarship in his name is also part of the Wayne Embry Legacy Project.

BROWN REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS: Sinking a pair of free-throws early in the second half at Ohio on Tuesday, Jan. 12, senior forward Dalonte Brown became the 37th member of Miami's 1,000 Point Club. Brown enters Miami's next game with 1,021 career points.

  • Junior guard Mekhi Lairy has dished out 22 assists over Miami's last four games. He handed out seven assists at Bradley (Dec. 19), accounting for 64 percent of the RedHawks' assists. Lairy has doled out five assists in each of the RedHawks' last three games: Northern Illinois (Jan. 9), Ohio (Jan. 12), Ball State (Jan. 19). Lairy ranks fourth among MAC leaders in conference-only games in assists (4.50).
  • In conference games, the RedHawks lead the MAC in turnover margin (+4.50). Miami is coming off a game against Ball State where it committed just eight turnovers while forcing 18 turnovers. The RedHawks scored 25 points off Cardinal turnovers.
  • Another stat that jumped off the sheet against Ball State was Miami's 23 second-chance points. Although the RedHawks were outrebounded 34-33, Miami swiped 13 boards off the offensive glass and took advantage of the second chance.
  • Senior forward Dalonte Brown paces the MAC in conference-only games at the free-throw line, connecting on 91.7 percent of his charity tosses. Brown is 11-of-12 from the free-throw line through four MAC games.
  • Miami leads the MAC in scoring defense on the season, allowing opponents just 69.44 ppg. 
  • With a .500 3-point field goal percentage in conference-only games, redshirt sophomore guard Myja White ties for second among conference leaders. Sophomore guard Dae Dae Grant ranks fifth (.467).
  • As a team, Miami ranks third in the MAC in blocked shots on the season (3.33 per game). Senior forward Precious Ayah, redshirt junior forward James Beck and junior forward Elijah McNamara all tie for sixth on the list (0.78 bpg). 
  • Senior forward Dalonte Brown played in his 100th career game on Tuesday, Dec. 15 against Buffalo. He has made 97 career starts entering Miami's next game.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks round out an action-packed week when they hit the road for a 5:30 p.m. game at Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 23. Miami returns home to host two straight, beginning with a 7 p.m. game against Toledo on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The RedHawks then entertain Western Michigan at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30.
