Miami Splits Sunday Home Games

The RedHawks beat Green Bay by a 5-1 margin before losing to Eastern Illinois by a 5-2 margin.
OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team (12-7) split its Sunday home games to wrap up the home opening weekend round-robin with Green Bay and Eastern Illinois. The RedHawks beat Green Bay by a 5-1 margin before falling to Eastern Illinois 5-2.
Miami 5, Green Bay 1
Taylor Rathe started the game in the circle and went four full innings. Rathe allowed only one run on five hits and a walk while striking out two batters. Courtney Vierstra pitched the final three innings and got all nine outs by strikeout.
After holding Green Bay to start the game, Miami scored a single run in the bottom of the first. Morgan Lott led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Holly Blaska. After stealing third, Lott scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Allie Cummins to give Miami the 1-0 lead after one.
The RedHawks added a run in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Hannah Obrey reached base on error to begin the inning and advanced to second on the play. Kara Leckinger advanced Obrey to third with a sacrifice bunt before a sacrifice bunt from Maclai Branson brought Obrey home. Miami would leave two on base to end the inning.
Green Bay tallied a run in the top of the third. The run scored from third on a wild pitch to cut the RedHawks' lead to 2-1.
Miami responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to increase its lead to 4-1. Blaska hit the lead-off single and scored on a two-run home run by Cummins, her third of the season.
The RedHawks added another run in the fourth inning. Branson reached base on error to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Haeley Tran. Lott hit her second triple of the weekend to score Branson and make it a 5-1 ball game.
Cummins led the offense with three RBIs while Lott went 2-of-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Miami 2, Eastern Illinois 5
Vierstra entered the game with two outs in the fourth inning as relief for the second time today. Vierstra finished the game, pitching three and a third innings and striking out five batters while giving up one hit and one run. Brianna Pratt pitched the first three and two-thirds innings as the starter.
Eastern Illinois scored two quick runs in the top of the first inning on a single, triple and a fielding error to take the 2-0 lead.
The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fourth when Eastern Illinois added three runs to extend its lead to 5-0. A single and a double scored the first run of the inning before Vierstra came into the game as relief with two outs. A two-run home run from the next batter made it 5-0.
Miami was kept off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. Adriana Barlow drew the lead-off walk and scored on a home run from Lott. Cummins drew a walk after EIU made a pitching change but would be stranded on first to end the inning. The 5-2 score would stand through seven.
Lott led the Miami offense with the two-run home run.
UP AHEAD
Miami travels to Indiana on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game before hosting Michigan State for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
