OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University men's basketball team hosts Central Michigan Thursday evening. This is a makeup game from the contest that was postponed on Jan. 28. Tickets from that previous date will be honored for this game. The contest will air live on ESPN+. An audio broadcast will be available on the Miami Sports Network from Van Wagner.
IF MAC TOURNAMENT BEGAN TODAY: The Mid-American Conference Tournament begins on Monday, March 9 with first round games at campus sites. The RedHawks currently are the 12th seed and would travel to fifth seed Ball State if the tournament began today. With three out of its last four contests at home, Miami has a real opportunity to move up in the standings. The RedHawks are currently 3-11, a half game behind 11th seed Western Michigan at 4-11. Eastern Michigan (who Miami has the tiebreaker over) currently holds the 10th seed at 5-10. Toledo and Eastern Michigan are tied for the eighth seed at 6-9.
LAIRY WITH ANOTHER BIG ASSIST GAME: Sophomore guard Mekhi Lairy recorded a team-high seven assists in Miami's game at Kent State on Tuesday. It was the 10th time this season he has recorded four or more assists. Lairy leads the RedHawks with 81 assists on the season. He has only committed 35 turnovers. His 2.31 assist/turnover ratio on the year ranks second in the MAC.
ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN: The Chippewas are 13-14 overall and 6-8 in the MAC. They have lost six games in a row, but the majority of them have been by single digits. They fell at home to Toledo, 93-81 in their last game on Tuesday. Central Michigan wants to run and it wants to score. The team averages 80.3 points per game, which leads the MAC and ranks 12th in the country. Four Chippewas average in double figures, led by senior forward David Dileo at 15.0 points per game.
THE SERIES WITH CENTRAL MICHIGAN: Miami leads the all-time series with Central Michigan, 53-22. The Chippewas have won the previous two meetings however, including the first meeting earlier this season, 93-82, on January 4 in Mount Pleasant. CMU jumped to a 19-4 lead to begin the game. The RedHawks made several valiant efforts to close the deficit, getting as close as four points, but were unable to get over the hump. Junior guard Nike Sibande led Miami with 22 points, while sophomore guard Mekhi Lairy contributed 18. The Chippewas had five in double figures, led by Dallas Morgan with 23.
UP NEXT: Miami remains at home to take on Bowling Green Saturday. The game will tip at 3:30 p.m. It is part of a tripleheader that will see the women's basketball team take on Akron at 1 p.m. and the hockey team face Omaha at Steve Cady Arena at 7:05 p.m. The men's basketball game has been designated Darrell Hedric Day, and the Miami Hall-of-Famer will be honored throughout the contest.
