Miami on Road Friday Before Home Opener Sunday

The RedHawks play Indiana on Friday and Saint Louis on Sunday.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team (0-2) is on the road on Friday before hosting its home opener on Sunday. The RedHawks will face Indiana on Friday at 3 p.m. On Sunday, Miami hosts Saint Louis at noon for heroes appreciation day.

The RedHawks opened the 2019 season last weekend with a road trip against two ranked opponents. Miami fell to No. 22 Albany by a 2-0 margin on Saturday before running out of time against No. 16 Delaware in a 2-1 loss. Junior forward Allie Grace Joyner scored the RedHawks goal while freshman goalkeeper Isabelle Perese played both complete games, making a combined 10 saves on the weekend.

OPPONENT PREVIEW

ABOUT INDIANA: The Hoosiers dropped their season opener at No. 12 Louisville last Friday, getting shut out 0-5, before earning a 4-3 win in double overtime against Drexel on Sunday to even Indiana's record at 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Mary Kate Kesler leads the Hoosiers offense with two goals and four total points. Junior goalkeeper Sachi Ananias has totaled 14 saves through the first two contests of the season.

SERIES WITH INDIANA: The Hoosiers hold the 12-8 advantage in all-time meetings against the RedHawks. In 2018, Miami shutout Indiana by a 5-0 margin in Oxford. Leonor Berlie tallied a goal and an assist in the contest while Kenzie Peterson scored on a pass from Morgan Sturm as well. As a team, the RedHawks scored on five of their seven shots on goal while limiting the Hoosiers to just two shots.

ABOUT SAINT LOUIS: The Billikens started the season with two losses last weekend, falling to Colgate by a 4-1 margin before being shut out by Central Michigan 3-0. Freshman Megan Rice put Saint Louis on the board first against Colgate with the Billikens' lone shot of the day before four-unanswered goals from Colgate finished the game.

SERIES WITH SAINT LOUIS: Miami holds a 16-9-2 all-time record against Saint Louis. In 2018, the RedHawks earned a 4-1 victory against the Billikens. Berlie scored a goal and an assist in this game as well with Neely Lochmoeller scoring the game-winner and Joyner tacking on an insurance tally. The RedHawks defense limited Saint Louis to only two shots on goal while the offense earned 16 penalty corners and took 21 shots.

UP AHEAD: Miami is on the road on Friday, facing another Big Ten opponent in Michigan State at 3 p.m. The RedHawks return to Oxford to host Saint Francis on Sunday at 2 p.m. for youth day.
