Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Miami University volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Dayton squad as it fell, 0-3 (16-25, 14-25, 20-25) Friday afternoon at the Buckeye Invitational. The RedHawks are now 4-6 on the season, while the Flyers improve to 6-5.
Dayton made only eight errors during the contest, hitting at a .390 clip. They also had 10.5 blocks. That proved to be too much to overcome despite strong performances from sophomore outside hitter
Gaby Harper (eight kills and six blocks) and junior middle hitter
Avarie Powell (six kills and .333 attack percentage).
"We couldn't keep ourselves in system, and we rarely forced Dayton out of system," said head coach
Carolyn Condit. "This made it difficult to build a lead. I am pleased with the experience younger athletes are receiving in our lineup."
Miami led off set one with a kill from junior right side hitter
Sarah Wojick off an assist from junior setter
Morgan Seaman, but Dayton was able to jump to a 7-3 lead. A kill from Harper and two from Powell off assists from sophomore setter
Louise Comerford cut the deficit to two at 7-9. The Flyers answered with an 11-5 run to take control at 20-13. That proved to be enough as UD took a 25-16 win.
Dayton took an 8-1 lead to begin set two. Kills from senior middle hitter
Margaret Payne and freshman outside hitter
Lindsay Taylor, along with two straight service aces from Comerford helped close the deficit to four at 7-11. The Flyers scored the next three to break it open and eventually put a way a 25-14 victory.
Set three was much closer as the teams traded points early. Trailing 6-7, a kill from Payne and two straight Dayton attack errors gave Miami a 9-7 advantage. The Flyers answered with a 10-3 run to retake the lead at 17-12. The RedHawks did not give up as kills from sophomore outside hitter
Sophie Riemersma and Payne, along with service aces by senior defensive specialist
Emma Leahy and Seaman were part of an 8-5 run that pulled Miami within two at 20-22. That would be as close as the 'Hawks would get as the Flyers scored the final three points to earn a 25-20 win and take the match in three sets.
Seaman led Miami with 14 assists, while junior libero
Abigail Huser had 10 digs.
The RedHawks conclude play at the Buckeye Invitational later Saturday when they take on Illinois State at 5:30 p.m.
