RedHawks Fall in Five-Set Battle Against Ohio State

OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University volleyball team (3-1) fell just short to Ohio State (1-2) in five sets (25-15, 25-27, 27-25, 25-27, 3-15) at Millett Hall on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The RedHawks first four points came from kills, giving them a 4-2 lead at the start of the first set. A solo block from Molly Creech brought the crowd to their feet at 6-3. An attack error by the Buckeyes extended the RedHawks' lead to 11-5. Ohio State came within two points at 13-11. Chelsea Williams put down a strong kill, and Gentry Warrick added a pair of blocks to push the RedHawks ahead 16-11. Lauren Coyne and Warrick combined for back-to-back blocks for a 19-12 advantage. Warrick secured a 25-15 first-set victory with a solo block.
  • The second set was back-and-forth, with no team leading by more than two points until the Buckeyes claimed an 8-6 lead. Two attack errors by Ohio State evened the set at 8-8. Halfway through, Ellie Hanson pounded a kill to force a Buckeye timeout after Miami took a 15-14 lead. Williams had a couple of kills, and an Ohio State attack error gave Miami its largest lead of the set at 19-17. Despite a strong effort, the Buckeyes ultimately secured a 27-25 win in the set.
  • A one-handed dig by Anna McClure set up Coyne for a huge kill to move the RedHawks in front 4-3 at the start of the third set. Hanson knocked down two kills to keep things close at 10-10. With the score even at 15-15, Miami rattled off three points to take its largest lead since the start of the set. The Buckeyes remained determined, tying it at 22-22. A service error and an attack error gave Miami a 27-25 third-set win.
  • A Creech kill got the Red and White going at the start of the fourth set, making it 3-2. Two more kills from Creech, along with a block by Warrick and Williams, helped Miami stay in the fight at 11-11. With the set still tied at 16-16, Ohio State found its rhythm and took a 24-20 lead. The RedHawks clawed their way back to take a 25-24 lead before the Buckeyes closed out the set 27-25.
  • Hayden Hicks opened the final set of play with a service ace. The Buckeyes responded with 11 consecutive points to fuel a 15-3 win in the last set.
