Miami Falls in Five-Set Match to IU Indy

CINCINNATI, Ohio— The Miami University volleyball team (3-4) fell to IU Indy (4-2) in five sets (28-26, 20-25, 17-25, 25-16, 13-15) to close out the Xavier Tournament on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • No team led by more than a point in the first set until Miami claimed an 8-6 advantage. With the set tied at 15-15, a Lauren Coyne kill, as well as a block assist from Coyne and Lydia Michelin, helped give the RedHawks a 19-17 lead that forced an IU Indy timeout. The Jaguars went on to take set point at 24-23, but Miami ultimately ended the first set by outscoring IU Indy 5-2 to claim a 28-26 win.
  • The Jaguars jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the second set. A couple of IU Indy errors and Gentry Warrick blocks evened the score at 7-7. A flurry of kills from Molly Creech kept Miami ahead 12-10 halfway through the set. Michelin and Creech each put down a kill as the end of the set approached to trail 21-19. The Jaguars found a way to hold on to the lead and take the second set 25-20.
  • IU Indy had another hot start at the beginning of the third set, as it took a 9-3 lead. A pair of kills from Chelsea Williams sparked an offensive burst from the RedHawks to shrink the score to 12-9. The Jaguars followed this up with a flurry of their own points to stretch the lead out to 21-12. IU Indy capitalized on the lead it built and closed the set out with a 25-17 victory.
  • With IU Indy winning 4-3 at the start of the fourth set, Miami scored five consecutive points to separate from the Jaguars at 8-4. IU Indy shrank the RedHawk lead to 9-8 before Miami once again answered with a large run, this time outscoring the Jaguars 8-1 to lead 17-9. The RedHawks held on to their lead at the end of the set, as Michelin smacked down a kill and Kamryn Utley added a service ace to end the set with a 25-16 win.
  • Creech kept things close for the RedHawks in the fifth set with two kills to make it 2-2. IU Indy eventually took a 10-4 lead when a Williams kill, a Warrick kill and a Grace Kreutz service ace brought the RedHawks within three. The Red and White battled to tie the score at 13-13, but the effort fell just short, as the Jaguars secured the final set 15-13.
NOTES:
  • Michelin set a career-high 10 blocks to lead the match.
  • Grace Kreutz led all players with a career-best two service aces.
  • Anna Mcclure recorded the most digs of the match (20).
