What They're Saying About Coach Bergeron

"Working with Chris, I was able to see firsthand his ability to connect with and inspire people. Chris is a man of great integrity and passion. When he speaks to players and recruits, it is with such passion and belief that those listening are truly inspired. Chris puts character first. He will recruit the type of character people that Miami Hockey's foundation has been built on. Chris will have a high standard and demand his players reach that standard on and off the ice. Chris's passion for Miami University and RedHawk Hockey is extraordinarily high and will be visible to all who come in contact with him. I wish Chris and his family great luck in Oxford."
-Jeff Blashill, Detroit Red Wings Head Coach (Miami Assistant Coach 2002-08)
"When he was recruiting me I felt very comfortable with him. I trusted him and believed what he was saying. I wasn't getting the used car salesman pitch from him and the coaching staff. They had a vision of where the program should be and knew what they were going to do.
"He challenged me every single day at practice, games and school. He wanted to make sure that everyone in that locker room was pushed to be the best version of themselves. I remember countless times over the years when I was there that he pulled me aside and said I wasn't good enough this weekend. He knew I had more and he pushed me and a lot of guys to get more out of themselves. That's the type of guy he is. He expects a lot and if you give your full effort on and off the ice, you'll have no issues with him. He's a guy that has had a tremendous impact on my career. I continue to talk with him about different situations even today."
-Andy Greene, Miami defenseman (2002-06), New Jersey Devils defenseman (2006-present)
"Miami is getting a very well-prepared coach and a man who holds players accountable. He makes sure guys work hard and put in the effort. He expects a lot from his players and knows that with the right ingredients, the results will follow. Everyone I talk to has enjoyed playing for him. There was a genuine sense of excitement that this program can get back sooner rather than later to where we all expect it be. I'm excited for the program and university for Bergeron to be back.
"He cares as much about the person as the hockey player. That's important because you spend every day with him and he has your best interests in mind as a person first and foremost. As an alum, keeping in touch you know it's the case. What I appreciated is he was prepared from a player and team perspective. He also took the time to work with the players on an individual basis to get people to be better players. He understands that individual development is important and will lead to a greater team game as well. He's an incredible hire for the university and we are lucky to have him leading the program."
-Tommy Wingels, Miami forward (2007-10), NHL forward (2010-18)
"He brings an intensity to the game and a passion that is hard to describe unless you played for him. One of the things we always said is you never wanted to make a coach disappointed in you. He was a coach you never wanted to disappoint and so you always brought a level to the rink that he could bring out of you for practice or games that made you get better every day.
"One thing that sticks out to me from my time with Chris at Miami was when I was going through some family issues and it was affecting me. The whole staff helped take care of me, but once in the middle of a drill Chris pulled me aside to make sure I was okay. I was missing my turns, but Chris felt it was more important to make sure I was okay than to be in that drill at the moment. As important as hockey is, the person as a human being is the most important thing to Chris Bergeron."
