
Miami Blanks Youngstown State for First Win of the Season

The RedHawks shut out Youngstown State by a 6-0 margin on Saturday.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Miami University softball team (1-2) shut out Youngstown State (0-3) by a 6-0 margin on Saturday to earn its first win of the 2019 season.
Miami 6, Youngstown State 0
Taylor Rathe started the game in the circle for the RedHawks. Rathe pitched two full innings, striking out three batters and allowing no runs on three singles. Brianna Pratt relieved Rathe at the beginning of the third. Pratt pitched for three innings, striking out five while allowing no runs and two hits. Courtney Vierstra pitched the final two innings in the circle, striking out two and allowing no runs or hits while facing only six total batters.
Miami struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs after holding Youngstown State's offense to a single before registering three-straight outs. Johniann Wahl was walked with two outs and scored on a double from Ashton Slone. Kara Leckinger reached base on an error that allowed Slone to score. Jenny Vasquez hit a double to advance Leckinger to third before being stranded on base.
Rathe struck out three batters in the second inning to keep Youngstown State scoreless before Miami extended its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of two. Mackenzie Moore was walked and advanced to second on a single from Morgan Lott. Haeley Tran laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Moore and Lott. Wahl was walked again to load the bases with two outs. Slone scored two with her second hit of the day. Leckinger also picked up an RBI on a two-out single. Vasquez was walked to load the bases but the inning ended with the bases loaded.
Pratt struck out three batters in the third inning but the score remained 5-0 in favor of Miami after three as Lott was stranded on first after hitting a single.
The score did not change until the bottom of the fifth inning. Vasquez hit her second double of the day and scored on a double from Lily Wilmot to give Miami a 6-0 lead. Vierstra retired six-straight batters to end the game.

Miami concludes play at the USC Upstate Tournament on Sunday. The RedHawks will start the day with a re-match against East Carolina at 11 a.m., followed by a game against the host team at 1 p.m.
