
Miami Splits Final Day of USC Upstate Tournament

The RedHawks beat ECU in the first game but fell to the host team in the final game.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Miami University softball team (2-3) split the final day of the USC Upstate Tournament on Sunday. The RedHawks won their rematch with East Carolina by a 3-1 margin to start the day. Miami concluded the day with a 1-3 loss against host team USC Upstate.
Miami 3, East Carolina 1
Taylor Rathe pitched the complete game in the circle for the 'Hawks. Rathe allowed only one run on five hits while striking out three batters.
East Carolina struck first with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning after Kara Leckinger threw out a runner trying to steal second for the second out. Miami left two on base in the bottom of the first as Morgan Lott and Johniann Wahl both walked and advanced to second and third base.
Miami took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a two-out single from Leckinger. Ashton Slone and Jenny Vasquez were both walked with two outs. Slone scored on Leckinger's single and Vasquez scored on an ECU fielding error on the same play.
Wahl gave the RedHawks a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off home run, her second home run of the weekend.
Wahl and Leckinger led the Miami offense with a hit and an RBI each. Lott and Haeley Tran each had a hit as well.

Miami 1, USC Upstate 3
Brianna Pratt started in the circle for Miami. She pitched 5.2 innings, striking out eight batters while allowing two runs on six hits and two walks. Courtney Vierstra replaced Pratt with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when USC Upstate took a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI double.
USC Upstate extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a flurry of four hits. The first two batters were retired before the next two each hit singles and stole a base to put runners on second and third with two outs. A single scored both runners.
Miami put together a rally in the top of the seventh but the rally fell short. Tran led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single from Wahl. Ashton Slone drove in Miami's lone run of the game with a single. After Slone's RBI, USC Upstate changed its pitcher and the RedHawks did not score again.
Wahl led the Miami offense with two hits while Slone picked up the only Miami RBI.
UP AHEAD
Miami travels to Las Vegas next weekend for the 2019 Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic. The RedHawks play their first game of the tournament on Friday against Utah Valley.
