Softball Travels To Spartanburg to Open 2019 Season

Miami will play in a tournament at USC Upstate this weekend.
OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team opens the 2019 season this weekend with a tournament at USC Upstate.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
Miami begins the season against Towson at 11 a.m. on Friday. Last season, Towson finished with a 42-19 overall record including a 13-8 record in conference play. The Tigers lost both games in the CAA Tournament, the first one to Hofstra and the second to UNCW. Towson returns junior first baseman Madison Wilson and senior power hitter Nicole Stockinger. Wilson returns the highest batting average of last season (.389) while Stockinger led the team with 15 home runs last season. Towson lost its starting pitcher but return its second in sophomore Melissa Abrahamian.
Also on Friday, the RedHawks will play East Carolina at 3 p.m. East Carolina finished the 2018 season with a 23-32 overall record and an 8-13 record in conference play. Last season, The Pirates were knocked out of the American Athletic Conference Championships by Houston in ECU's first game. Eastern Carolina returns sophomore outfielder Tyler King and red-shirt junior infielder Tate McClellan. King led the team in batting average (.282), hits (53), runs (24) and at-bats (188). McClellan led the team in doubles (12), RBI (34), total bases (84) and was second in home runs (10). The Pirates also return their top pitcher in sophomore Erin Poepping.
Miami plays Youngstown State on Saturday at 11 a.m. Youngstown State finished last season with a 25-26 overall record and a 14-10 record in conference play. YSU returns senior outfielder Lexi Zappitelli and senior pitcher Paige Geanangel. Zappitelli led the Youngstown State offense last season in batting average (.413), triples (3), total bases (77), slugging percentage (.611) and on-base percentage (.490). Geanangel led the pitching staff in ERA (3.19), wins (12), appearances (31), starts (23), complete games (15), saves (3) and innings pitched (147.0).
The RedHawks play East Carolina again on Sunday at 11 a.m. before facing the host team in USC Upstate at 1 p.m. to conclude the tournament. USC Upstate finished the 2018 season with a 35-19 overall record and a 10-6 record in conference play. USC Upstate returns its starting pitcher in senior Christina Biggerstaff. Last season, Biggerstaff led the USC Upstate pitchers in ERA (2.03), wins (18), appearances (34), starts (28), complete games (19) and innings pitched (193.0).
