Miami Drops Opening Day at USC Upstate Tournament

The RedHawks lost to Towson and East Carolina on opening day on Friday.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Miami University softball team (0-2) were swept on opening day at the USC Upstate Tournament on Friday. In the morning game, the RedHawks fell to Towson by a 3-8 margin. Miami concluded the day with a 1-9 loss in five innings against East Carolina.
Miami 3, Towson 8
Courtney Vierstra got the start on the mound for Miami, pitching five innings. She struck out four batters and gave up five earned runs during her stint. Taylor Rathe relieved Vierstra on the mound after the first two batters of the sixth inning. Rathe struck out a batter as well.
Vierstra retired three-straight batters to start the game, striking out two. Morgan Lott and Johniann Wahl hit back-to-back solo home runs to give Miami a 2-0 after the first inning of play.
Towson responded with a home run to lead off the second inning. Vierstra walked two batters and gave up a single but Lott threw out the runner at home to preserve the 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the second. Adriana Barlow and Haeley Tran each singled in the second inning but were stranded on base.
Towson tied the game at two in the top of the third on a Miami fielding error. Ashton Slone singled and advanced to second on a passed ball but was left on second to end the inning with a tie game.
Towson took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning, scoring a run on a pair of singles and a fielder's choice. The inning ended with Lizzie Bollinger catching a runner stealing second. Hannah Obrey and Mackenzie Moore both reached base and were advanced with a sacrifice hit from Tran, but were left on second and third.
Towson extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth with a walk and a triple. Miami loaded the bases, starting with a double from Wahl, and scored on a walk from Obrey, cutting the Towson lead to one run.
Towson scored four runs in the sixth inning to cap scoring at 8-3, but Rathe put together a three up, three down inning in the top of the seventh to hold off any more offense from Towson. Slone led off the seventh inning with a walk but the 'Hawks couldn't get the rally going.
Wahl led the Miami offense with a home run and a double (2-of-4). Lott also hit a home run.
Miami 1, East Carolina 9 (5 inn.)
Brianna Pratt started her first game on the mound in a RedHawk uniform and pitched the complete game.
In the first inning, Lott reached base on an error but was out on a fielder's choice to end the inning. Pratt registered her first career strikeout in the bottom of the first but not before East Carolina took a 2-0 lead with a trio of singles and a pair of stolen bases.
Barlow reached base on an error in the top of the second but was stranded on second base. ECU responded with three runs on three hits and two walks to take a 5-0 lead after two complete innings.
Bollinger reached base on an error to lead off the third inning. Lott hit a single followed by a single from Slone to put Miami on the scoreboard.
The score remained 5-1 until East Carolina scored once in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-1. ECU hit a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
UP AHEAD
Miami continues play at the USC Upstate Tournament on Saturday. The RedHawks play Youngstown State at 11 a.m.
