Outstanding women's mile highlights the day for Miami.
UPDATE 2/16 - In addition to the OSU meet Friday, several men's runners also competed at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday. In the 800m, Sean Torpy put up an even better time than the school-record number he recorded last weekend, running a 1:48.44. This would be good enough to put Torpy 12th in the country judging by the pre-weekend national performance list. Christopher Torpy also recorded a strong run, finishing seventh with a 1:50.22.
Along with the Torpy brothers, many of the RedHawk men turned in PR-worthy runs, including Anthony Camerieri (800), Ivan Dye (400), and David Coffey, Charlie Harders, and Alex Tam (all 3000m).
COLUMBUS - In its last full event until next week's Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship, the Miami University track and field team spent Friday at Ohio State's Buckeye Tune-Up.Â
Miami's strongest event on the day came in the mile, which saw the RedHawks sweep the podium. Rachel Kotchman set a personal record 5:03.62 to win the event and was followed close behind by McKenna Fry in second with a 5:03.97. Emma Bryant rounded out the trio with a 5:06.06 run for third. In addition to the top three, the 'Hawks ended the race with four of the top five as Katie Vitou came in fifth with 5:13.34.
In her second time running the event, Olivia Bechtel ran a personal best 7:56 in the prelims of the 60m dash to qualify for the finals. Bechtel finished the event in third with a 7:58 run in the finals. In the 60m hurdles, Mallory Harr was able to earn herself a spot in the finals, where she finished sixth with a run of 9.06.
Claire Linn turned in one of the best runs of the day over in the 800 as she blasted her own personal record by a full seven seconds, running a 2:16.49. This earned Linn a second-place finish in the event.Â
The RedHawks have found a lot of success in the 4x400 recently, finishing in the top-two in four straight meets. This week's team was a bit of a different look, as Faith Baxter, Sarah Bruns, Mallory Harr, and Gabby Maslowski lined up for the RedHawks, taking fourth with a 4:01.11 run. Baxter also took a top ten over in the 200m, recording a 26.73.
The Red and White put up some great numbers over in the day's field events. In the triple jump, Hannah Falcione turned in a big personal record as she jumped a 12.14m and snagged herself a second-place finish. Sarah Bruns also took second in her event, jumping 5.51m in the long jump. This marked the first collegiate jump for Bruns in the event.Â
Rounding out the jumps, the RedHawks placed two in the top five of the high jump. Molly Balcer equaled her PR by clearing 1.63m to finish in third, while Hannah Bush did eclipse her own best mark with a 1.58 to take fifth. Another PR came in the pole vault, as Emily Fletchall cleared 3.58m to reach the event's top ten.
Among the RedHawks' men's athletes, Jeremiah Hunter took the victory in the 200m with a quick 22.14 run. He also earned himself a spot in the 60m dash finals, where he placed third with a 6.78.
