The conference meet will be hosted by Kent State from Feb. 22-23.
OXFORD, Ohio - After months of competition, the indoor track and field season will culminate this weekend at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. The Miami University women's team will visit host Kent State University to compete in the conference meet this Friday and Saturday as they look to contend for the conference crown.
The meet is slated to get underway Friday morning at the Kent State Field House with the pentathlon and weight throw commencing at 11 a.m. Running events will get going at 3 p.m. with 60m hurdles prelims; most of Friday afternoon on the track will consist of prelims before culminating in the 5000m and distance medley finals in the evening. Saturday's field events will begin at noon with the triple jump, while track event finals will start at 1:30. The meet will conclude with the awards ceremony at 5 p.m., following the conclusion of the 4x400 relay. The full schedule is linked above.
Miami will send a total of 31 entries (including relay teams) to KSU to compete. One big name to watch who could potentially rack up quite a few points for the RedHawks is junior Olivia Bechtel. Bechtel, who recently broke the school 400m record, will compete in three individual events and will be among the favorites in all of them. Bechtel will run in the 400m (where she is seeded second), 200m (5), and 60m (6). She is also a candidate to be a part of Miami's 4x400 relay team that has found a lot of success this spring and comes into the event seeded second among all MAC teams. The individual 400m features three RedHawks seeded in the top ten as Bechtel is joined by Kalliopi Kountouri and Emily Hooker.Â
The other Miami relay team over in the distance medley also comes into the weekend as the second-seeded team in the conference. Among distance runners, senior Emma Mashburn will be competing in the most events with the mile, 3000m, and 5000m. Another high seed in the track events comes from Rachel Kotchman, the seven seed in the 800m.
Over in the field events, Hannah Falcione will be an athlete to keep an eye on as she comes in as one of the favorites for the triple jump. Falcione set her personal record just last week at the Buckeye Tuneup, which was good for fourth in the MAC. Mikaylah Woods is another field event who could have a big impact, as she will be competing in the long jump.Â
Miami's full list of entrants is listed below, and a list of all participants is linked above.
The Red and White will look to improve upon last year's tenth-place finish at the conference championship. The 4x400 squad was one of the highlights of last year's event, as they took third; Bechtel also found the podium last year as she finished third in the 400m herself. Eastern Michigan is the defending champion.
While the women are at the conference meet, five RedHawk men will be in New York for the USATF Indoor Championships. For information on that meet, click here.
