Four Miami players had multiple points as Jordan Uhelski picked up his first Miami win.
OXFORD, Ohio – A balanced scoring performance coupled with a stingy defense led the Miami hockey team to a 5-1 opening night victory over Alabama Huntsville on Saturday.
Four RedHawks (1-0) picked up multiple points while Jordan Uhelski made 17 saves against his former team in the victory.
After the teams felt each other out in the early going, Miami got on the board with 4:48 gone by when Carter Johnson lugged the puck up ice, drove the net and beat Mark Sinclair to put the RedHawks up 1-0. His lane up the ice was set up by breakout feeds from Brian Hawkinson and River Rymsha, their first Miami points.
UAH (0-1) tied it up on its first shot of the night when Austin Beaulieu scored on a shot from the right circle to the far post to even it up at one apiece. However, the RedHawks answered that just 42 seconds later when Karch Bachman forced a turnover and drove the net, working around Sinclair and sending the puck in from the doorstep to put MU back in front. Alec Mahalak and Casey Gilling both picked up assists on the tally.
The RedHawks got to work on three power plays and held an 11-4 shots on goal advantage, but the score remained 2-1 in Miami's favor after 20 minutes.
A major penalty opened up a long power play for the Red and White early in the second period. Miami cashed in for one power play tally in the five-minute span as Gordie Green found a rebound from a Derek Daschke point shot and buried to make it a 3-1 game with 4:42 gone by in the period. Bachman also picked up a helper on the goal as the RedHawks took the two-goal lead into the dressing room.
The Red and White found some more breathing room in the third as Daschke netted his first-collegiate tally when his one-timer got through traffic and caught the inside of the post and went to make it 4-1 with 10:14 left. Green picked up an assist as he drew defenders in at the middle of the point with a faked slap shot before dishing into Daschke's wheelhouse while Grant Hutton also picked up a helper.
While only facing 18 shots, Jordan Uhelski kept the Chargers from getting momentum when he stopped Hans Gorowsky on a shorthanded breakaway in the latter stages of the period. With time winding down, Hutton netted his first goal of the year after Josh Melnick dug the puck out of the half wall for Jonathan Gruden to whip a centering pass right to MU's co-captain and cap the scoring.
The RedHawks outshot the Chargers 38-18 on the evening with Bachman, Daschke, Green and Hutton finishing with a goal and an assist each.
MU wraps up its weekend series on Sunday with a 3 p.m. matinee opening faceoff.
