OXFORD, Ohio -- Following a blistering opening half, the Miami University men's basketball team was unable to overcome a pair of prolonged scoring droughts, dropping a 67-62 result to Western Michigan University Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall.
Junior guard Darrian Ringo led the RedHawks (8-7, 1-1 MAC) with a double-double, tallying 14 points and 11 assists. Freshman guard Nike Sibande also posted double-figures with 13 points and six rebounds. For the game, Miami shot 39.7 percent from the field and 29.6 percent from beyond the arc.
The first half proved to be a back-and-forth affair with each team finding success in the paint. Senior forward Logan McLane was a strong presence for the RedHawks, tallying nine points in the half to go along with five rebounds. McLane dueled with Western Michigan guard Thomas Wilder, as both players scored all their respective teams' points for a three-minute stretch. In the closing moments of the half, freshman guard Isaiah Coleman-Lands nailed three free throws to make it 33-27 as the teams headed to the locker room.
Miami came out firing to begin the second half, scoring six quick points to build a 12-point lead. Eventually, the RedHawks receded as they went over four minutes without a field goal, allowing the Broncos to narrow the margin to 43-38 at the 12:43 mark. Back-to-back 3-pointers from senior guard Jake Wright and sophomore forward Bam Bowman helped restore a double-digit lead, but WMU used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 53-49 at the eight-minute mark.
A 3-pointer from Sibande ended the drought, but the Broncos' sharp shooting from outside gave them their first lead, 57-56, with 3:45 to play. With the lead in hand, WMU looked to seal the game with clutch rebounding, but a late Miami rally would complicate matters.
Following two free throw makes from Ringo, freshman guard Jalen Adaway intercepted the inbounds pass and set Miami up down five with under a minute to go. After Adaway drove in for a layup, Miami forced a WMU travel, but `Hawks were unable to convert on the subsequent possession. Two late free throws and a breakaway dunk would finish the contest and deny Miami a comeback victory.
The RedHawks remain home for their next matchup as they face Kent State on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN3.
