Olivia Winnett scored late in the contest to pull the RedHawks (0-8, 0-1 Mid-American) within one, but the Rockets (4-4-1, 1-0 MAC) scored an insurance goal to seal the team's conference opener.
"We learned a lot today," head coach Hugh Seyfarth said. "If we play with the intensity in the 55th minute in the first minute, we will win a lot of games. However, you have to be desperate to score in the penalty area and play with a good amount of energy. We did that in the second half and for a lot of the first half, but we got off to a slow start, which is disappointing."
The Rockets struck just 5:34 into the match as Sophie Pohl got a head on an in close cross and redirected it into the net to put them on top 1-0. UT threatened at other points of the half, outshooting MU by an 8-4 margin and forcing Patricia Koutoulas to make three stops. Miami's top chance came in the 41st minute as a corner kick service by Amy Malone found Shae van Gassen's head, but it went over the net and left the Red and White trailing by a goal at the break.
Miami poured on the pressure in the second half, firing four of the first five shots of the frame. Three of those attempts were on target, with Madison Perrin turning aside each RedHawk attempt. After Miami came close to an equalizer, Toledo managed to pad its lead in the 66th minute when Anita Mancini found a bouncing ball loose atop the 18-yard box and blasted one into the upper 90.
Not content to go quietly, Winnett got Miami on the board with her second goal of the season. She turned and fired a shot from 23 yards out that found the top corner and cut the deficit to 2-1 with 14:09 remaining. The momentum was short lived, however, as Hannah Scafaria won a foot race to a loose ball and lofted a shot over Koutoulas in the 83rd minute that gave UT some breathing room once again.
The RedHawks had one good opportunity late as Winnett worked a pass through the keeper box, but the subsequent shot was fired over the net and out of play as the Rockets secured the win.
Miami outshot Toledo by a 7-4 margin in the second half to finish just one behind (12-11) in the overall stats. UT also held a slim lead (4-3) in corner kicks on the afternoon. Koutoulas made four saves for the Red and White while Perrin also finished with four saves in the other net.
The RedHawks return to the pitch on Sunday when they head to Bowling Green. Opening kick is at 1 p.m.
