Last Week: Miami (29-22, 14-10 MAC) closed out the regular season by taking two of three from Akron at home. In Saturday's series opener, sophomore starter Shannon Hohman controlled much of the contest, retiring the first 15 Zips she faced. The RedHawk offense was unable to support Hohman, only mustering a first-inning run on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, while leaving nine on base for the game. In the top of the seventh, a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, forcing senior Kelsey Fredericks to relieve Hohman. On her first at-bat, Akron right fielder Taylor Kirian broke open the game with a grand slam to left-center, leading to a 4-1 Zips victory. In the second matchup, both offenses remained stagnant until junior third baseman Kat Lee put the Red and White on the board with a RBI single to right in the bottom of the third. Senior righthander Carly Mortensen's two-hit complete game shutout helped the RedHawks rebound for a 3-0 win. (RECAP) In Sunday's regular season finale, the Zips started hot by quickly taking a 1-0 lead, but a pair of strikeouts left the bases loaded to end the frame. In the bottom half of the first, an error allowed sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman to score from second, tying the game at 1. Mortensen entered in relief in the third and proceeded to sit down 12 consecutive Zips in another outstanding effort. The RedHawks took advantage of an Akron error in the bottom of the third, scoring Lee on a double to left-center by junior left fielder Kaitlyn Gliha. Schlattman then clinched the game with three more RBIs as Miami cruised to a 5-1 result. Mortensen completed an outstanding weekend with five innings of two-hit ball, striking out four for her second win of the series. (RECAP) This Week: The RedHawks will now head to Akron to defend their league title in the 2017 MAC Softball Championship. Sixth-seeded Miami will face No. 3 NIU in its opener on Wednesday at 6 p.m., followed by a matchup against either No. 2 Ohio or No. 7 Akron on Thursday. (RELEASE)

Last Week: Miami (20-30, 6-12 MAC) took part in five games this past week and went 1-4. The RedHawks kicked off their slate with a pair of extra-inning losses in midweek action, first at No. 2 Louisville on Tuesday. MU ran out to a 5-0 lead but the Cardinals struck back with six unanswered runs to top the Red & White, 6-5, in 10 innings (RECAP). At home on Wednesday against Butler, Miami tied the game late with two runs in the ninth but the Bulldogs came back with four runs in the top half of the 10th to win by an 8-4 score (RECAP). The 'Hawks stayed home for the weekend to host Buffalo in a three-game series. MU fell into an early 4-0 hole in the series opener and the Bulls would hang on late to escape with a 6-5 victory (RECAP). The teams then split a Sunday doubleheader, the first game a 1-0 pitchers' duel that went the way of Buffalo. The two teams combined for 30 strikeouts in the contest with each starter posting 11 punch outs. The series finale saw the RedHawks bounce back with a 5-3 victory behind some timely hitting and more solid performances on the mound (RECAP). This Week: Miami is off until this weekend when it heads to Kent State for a three-game set with the Golden Flashes.
