OXFORD, Ohio - The RedHawk baseball team dropped a pitchers' duel in game one before bouncing back in game two to earn a doubleheader split against Buffalo on Sunday at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The Bulls took the first contest, 1-0, before Miami battled back grab a 5-3 victory in the series finale.
Game 1 Recap - Buffalo 1, Miami 0
Both sides came up empty after loading the bases in the first inning, situations that turned out to be key in the contest because only one total run would be scored, an RBI double for the Bulls in the seventh.
The Miami and Buffalo pitching staffs combined to strike out 30 hitters, 16 for the 'Hawks and 14 for the Bulls. Red & White starter Zach Spears went for a career-high 11 punch outs, along with just two hits allowed, in five scoreless innings of work. Brad Schwartz, who tossed four innings of two-hit ball, was tagged with the loss after allowing the UB run in the seventh.
Game 2 Recap - Miami 5, Buffalo 3
The RedHawks (20-30, 6-12 MAC) bounced back from a tough offensive performance in game one by going for two runs in their first chance at the dish in game two. A two-out single by Ross Haffey and a double by Landon Stephens set the table for a two-run double to right by J.T. Stone, giving Miami an early 2-0 lead.
The third inning saw the two sides swap single tallies. In the top half, the Bulls (16-27, 8-10 MAC) plated one on an RBI double while the bottom half started with a Haffey solo blast to left center. Through three frames of play, the Red & White were maintaining a 3-1 lead.
Buffalo got back to within one in the fourth when an RBI single put the score at 3-2.
Miami added a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings to move out to a 5-2 margin. In the fifth, J.T. Stone reached on a two-out error before being brought home on a Cal Elvers double to right. In the sixth, Adam Yacek was able to score from second on an errant throw by the UB shortstop on a double play attempt.
The Bulls would push across just one more run when an RBI single in the eighth cut the RedHawk lead to 5-3. Ryan Marske, the second pitcher out of the bullpen for Miami, came up huge down the stretch. Following the aforementioned one-run single, Marske struck out three-straight Bulls to strand runners on second and third and get the Red & White out of a jam. He would go on to strike out three more in the ninth to seal the victory and collect his first save of the season.
Miami is off until this coming weekend when it takes on Kent State in a three-game series on the road.
