TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Miami University track and field turned in a great performance at Saturday's ISU Twilight at Indiana State despite finding out they would compete there just yesterday. When Friday's Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana was canceled due to rain, Indiana State invited the seemingly out-of-luck teams to their own meet.
The `Hawks did not falter at the late notice, recording nine first-place finishes on the day. The field team themselves accounted for four of the wins. Seniors Amelia Strickler, Martha Szekely, and Zubin Coleman each came away with victories. Strickler, who has been competing in both shot put and discus this spring, came away with her first win in the latter after marking a personal-best 145-11. Szekely's win in hammer throw -- earned with a toss of 189-8 -- marks her second in three meets. On the men's side, Zubin Coleman picked up his first career win in discus. Though he normally specializes in hammer throw, his discus of 171-5 goes down as a personal record for the senior. The other field win came from freshman Hannah Falcione whose personal-best 18-6 earned her her second long jump win this outdoor season.
Men's runners grabbed three wins of their own as well. Freshman Jeremiah Hunter, the team leader in the 100m dash, finished first with a personal-best time of 10.45. It was his second win of the outdoor season. The RedHawks went on to take the 200m as well when sophomore Jake Owens ran it in 21.72. Senior Zackery McBride took first in the 3000m steeplechase for the first time this season, turning in a time of 9:14.14.
Women's runners had two first place finishers in senior Alexus Jimson-Miller and freshman Olivia Bechtel. Jimson-Miller's second straight win in the 100m hurdles came as a result of a college-best 13.57. Bechtel, the team leader in the 200m and 400m, tallied her third win in the former this season with a personal-best 24.19. If you include her wins in the 400m and 4x400m, Bechtel has won or contributed to winning 10 races this spring.
A group of women's distance runners descended onto the Kentucky Relays for a 5000m run as well on Saturday. That contingent was led by standout Maria Scavuzzo, whose 17:03.91 time paced the field and represented a season best and took first place in the meet.
The `Hawks will now turn their focus to the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. This conference meet will take place May 11-13 on the campus of Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. A full preview will be available this coming week.
