Last Week: Miami (13-23) went 5-0 this past week in all non-conference action, starting with a home-and-home against Dayton in midweek play. At Dayton on Tuesday, the RedHawks fell in an early 3-0 hole but scored two or more runs each of the final six innings and went on to top the Flyers, 16-9, behind a season-high 16 hits. Landon Stephens, Adam Yacek and Hayden Senger each had three-hit efforts to lead the way. (RECAP). Wednesday's rematch in Oxford saw Dayton tie it up at 6-all in the ninth before Miami eventually walked off on a Ross Haffey single in the bottom of the 12th (RECAP). The Red & White hosted La Salle for the weekend, getting things started on Friday in what turned out to be a pitcher's duel. MU starter Shane Smith went 8.1 innings strong and Dallas Hall's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh put Miami ahead for good as it held on to win the series opener, 3-2 (RECAP). Due to some forecasted inclement weather on Sunday, the two teams concluded the series with a Saturday doubleheader. The RedHawk offense erupted in game one as the team cruised to a 15-2 victory before earning the doubleheader and series sweep with a 7-1 win in the finale (RECAP). This Week: The Red & White begin their week with the Joe Nuxhall Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday at Marge Schott Stadium in Cincinnati. The team opens with Wright State at 3 p.m. on Tuesday before either playing Xavier or host Cincinnati on Wednesday. Miami then hits the road to return to conference play with a three-game series at Ohio beginning on Friday.
Softball
Last Week: Miami (23-17 overall, 9-6 MAC) moved into a tie for first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division with three comeback victories this past week. In Wednesday's return home matchup against BGSU, Miami faced an early deficit as the Falcons used three hits and a two-out error to pull out to a 3-0 lead in the second. In the bottom of the third, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman put the RedHawks on the board with a RBI single. The Red and White pulled ahead for good in the next frame as junior pinch-hitter Rylee Whispel brought home two with a RBI single to right, followed by freshman outfielder Haeley Tran scoring on an error to make it 5-3. Following a BGSU homer in the fifth, senior reliever Kelsey Fredericks sealed the game with 2.2 perfect innings, earning her fourth save of the year. (RECAP) On Friday, the RedHawks again used some late inning heroics to sweep a road doubleheader at Kent State. In the opener, sophomore first baseman Johniann Wahl had a terrific outing, homering in the second and tying the game with a RBI double in the third. After Kent State tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the fifth, Miami rebounded with an eight-run burst that wrapped up a run-rule victory. Senior outfielder Jenna Jones led off the top of the sixth with a homer to left, followed by a series of walks that helped Miami build an 8-4 lead. In her second at-bat of the inning, Jones returned to the plate and smacked a grand slam to clinch a 12-4 win. In the second matchup, the RedHawks' offense cooled down as they trailed 2-1 in the seventh with bases loaded and two outs. Whispel continued her clutch week with a two-run double that gave Miami a 3-2 win. (RECAP) In Saturday's series finale, the RedHawks were felled by three leadoff home runs from the Golden Flashes, although senior catcher Lauren Anderson gave them a chance with a late home run that cut the deficit to 3-2. However, Kent State proceeded to strike out the final two Miami batters to lock up a 3-2 result. (RECAP) This Week: Miami returns home this weekend for a three-game series against Buffalo.
