OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University baseball team extended its season-high win streak to five by collecting a doubleheader and series sweep over La Salle on Saturday. The RedHawks topped the Explorers in game one, 15-2, before closing with a 7-1 triumph in the series finale.
Game 1 Recap - Miami 15, La Salle 2
A couple La Salle (6-27) miscues allowed Miami to plate two runs in their first chance at the dish. Following two quick outs to start the inning, Ross Haffey reached on error before Grant Hartwig did the same, but unfortunately for the Explorers it was a three-base error this time as Hartwig ended the play standing on third and Haffey came around to score. Landon Stephens made La Salle pay even more when he doubled over the left fielder's head to bring in Hartwig and make the score 2-0 Miami through one.
The Red & White (13-23) added to their lead with their biggest inning of the game in the bottom of the second. In total, MU would send nine hitters to the plate and push across five runs on five hits. Texidor got things started with a one-out single through the left side and was brought around to score on a Dallas Hall double the next at bat. Tyler Harris followed with a two-bagger of his own, which plated Hall. After another out, Haffey drew a walk before a Hartwig triple brought him and Harris home. A Stephens single through the left side plated Hartwig and capped the frame's scoring, handing the `Hawks a 7-0 lead after two.
Miami continued to pile it on in the fourth inning, which started with a leadoff solo shot to left by Tyler Harris. Following a walk by Adam Yacek, Haffey tripled him in and then scored on a throwing error the next at bat. The inning netted three more runs and had the Red & White out in front, 10-0.
La Salle finally got in the game in the top of the fifth, striking for two runs courtesy of an RBI triple and an RBI groundout.
The `Hawks would put up another three-spot in the bottom of the sixth to put their lead at 13-2. The last three-run frame began much like this one as a leadoff homer got things started, this time by Stephens. Then, a Hayden Senger walk and a Cal Elvers single put two on for Texidor, who doubled down the left field line to score one before a balk tallied the third and final run of the seventh.
Miami tacked on two more in the seventh on an Elvers double that plated Haffey and Senger.
The Red & White got a quality start on the mound from Zach Spears (W, 2-6), who went six innings strong and allowed just two runs on two hits while striking out a career-high nine batters. Spencer Mraz, Ryan Marske and Cole Gnetz each tossed a scoreless inning in relief to cap the victory.
Game 2 Recap - Miami 7, La Salle 1
The Explorers notched a run in the top of the first when back-to-back hits, a triple and a single, resulted in a 1-0 advantage after just a half an inning of play.
The La Salle lead was short-lived though as the RedHawks would get on the board in the home half of the second. An Elvers double and a Texidor walk put two ducks on the pond for MU. Both advanced a base on a passed ball before a wild pitch scored Elvers and had Texidor standing on third. Following a Spencer Dull walk, Harris converted on a safety squeeze with Texidor hustling home to give the `Hawks a 2-1 margin after two innings of play.
Miami spent the latter two-thirds of the contest padding its lead. An RBI base hit by Yacek in the fourth tallied a single run for the Red & White and moved the score to 3-1. The team put up two runs in both the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, a balk with a runner on third scored one before and RBI single up the middle by Haffey plated another. In the eighth, another RBI base hit from Haffey and a RBI double from Stephens pushed across two more and made the score 7-1.
Hartwig, after a solid weekend at the plate, got the start on the mound and picked up his first collegiate victory following a strong 6.1 innings of work. The freshman surrendered just one run on four hits while fanning five. Nick Ernst (1.2 IP) and Andy Almquist (1.0 IP) closed the game by combining for three scoreless innings.
Miami returns to action on Tuesday when they open the Joe Nuxhall Classic with Wright State at 3 p.m. at Marge Schott Stadium in Cincinnati.
