ATHENS, Ohio -- The Miami University men's basketball team dropped its regular season finale to Ohio, 69-55, in a physical battle on Friday. The RedHawks complete the regular season at 11-20 and 4-14 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats are 19-10 overall and 11-7 in the MAC.
Freshman guard Michael Weathers led Miami with 17 points in the contest, while redshirt sophomore Jake Wright finished with 13 points. The RedHawks outshot Ohio 39.6 percent (19-for-48) to 35.6 percent (21-for-59), but the Bobcats used a large 49-29 rebounding margin, including 16 offensive, to help secure the win.
Wright helped Miami end a slow start offensively with a three-pointer that pulled the `Hawks to within two at 9-7 with 13:24 to go. Another triple from Wright tied the score at 11, while he drained a jumper to tie the score at 15 with seven minutes to go in the first half. Despite a layup from Michael Weathers, Ohio closed the period on a 15-4 run to take a 30-19 lead into the break.
The Bobcats extended the advantage to 17 points early in the second half, but an old-fashioned three-point play from junior forward Logan McLane and a deep triple from junior guard Abdoulaye Harouna cut the deficit to 11 at 38-27 with 15:50 to go. That was as close as the RedHawks could get over the next 11 minutes as Ohio pushed the lead back to 17 at 57-40 with 4:39 to go.
A layup from Michael Weathers started a comeback attempt by Miami. Freshman forward Marcus Weathers put down a dunk, while another layup from Michael Weathers were part of a quick 9-2 run that made it 59-49 with 3:05 to go. The Bobcats answered with a free throw, but a pair of freebies by Michael Weathers and a layup from Marcus Weathers cut the deficit to seven at 60-53 with 1:29 left. That would be as close as the RedHawks could get as Ohio hit its free throws down the stretch to finish off the 69-55 win.
Marcus Weathers just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. McLane had seven points and eight rebounds. Jason Carter led the Bobcats with a double-double of 16 points and 17 rebounds.
