OXFORD, Ohio- The Miami University men's basketball team was unable to climb out of an early hole in a 70-54 loss at the hands of the Bowling Green Falcons. With the loss, the RedHawks slip to 10-19 overall and 3-13 in the Mid-American Conference, while Bowling Green improves to 13-16 and 7-9 in the MAC.
Freshman guard Michael Weathers and junior guard Abdoulaye Harouna both scored 16 points to lead Miami. Weathers also grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while Harouna tied a career-high with five steals.
Miami was unable to find its way offensively to start the game, connecting only one of its first five shots. The Falcons, meanwhile, came out of the gate hot and jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the opening five minutes. The RedHawks' offensive woes would continue for the rest of the opening frame, but they were able to keep the game close behind a stingier defense and 10 first-half points from Michael Weathers. Miami closed out the half hitting four of their final six shots, and went to the locker room trailing 30-24.
MU was able to turn up the intensity out of the half, outscoring BGSU 8-2 over the first 2:47 of the second and tying the game at 32. The two teams would battle back-and-forth over the next eight minutes, until a quick 5-0 run saw Bowling Green grow its lead to seven with 9:35 left to play. This time, the RedHawks would be unable to come up with an immediate answer, as the Falcons continued to build on their advantage, going ahead 59-45 with 5:17 remaining.
This deficit would prove to be too much for the `Hawks to overcome, as the scoring margin never dropped within single-digits en route to a 70-54 final score.
Miami finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field, hurt by a 2-of-24 performance from beyond the arc, compared to BGSU's 47 percent. The RedHawks were able to force the Falcons into 18 turnovers, off which they scored 22 points.
Bowling Green was led by sophomore guard Antwon Lillard, who notched 16 points and nine rebounds.
The RedHawks will be back in action on Tuesday at Akron. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. and it will air live on Spectrum Sports, as well as ESPN3.
