Hockey
Last Week: The RedHawks (7-7-2) took on fifth-ranked Cornell in their final non-conference games of the season. Miami fell behind four minutes into Friday's contest and was under siege when it was called for a five-minute major penalty with just over six minutes gone by. MU managed to kill that power play off and struck on its own man advantages with Casey Gilling and Gordie Green staking the team to a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. While CU outshot MU 12-3 in the final 20 minutes, Miami held on thanks to 29 saves from Ryan Larkin and a season-high 19 blocked shots (Recap). Saturday was a different story as Cornell scored three goals 3:12 apart midway through the first period and held off some Miami pressure to force a split with a 4-0 win (Recap). This Week: The RedHawks resume NCHC play when they travel to Western Michigan this weekend.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: Miami trekked north to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the 22nd Annual Dr. Richard Porter Classic. The RedHawks' senior squad opened competition on Friday with a second-place showing in its short program (Recap). MU's senior team resumed action on Saturday and churned out a season-best performance in the free skate, claiming second place once again and finishing second in the overall standings (Recap). The collegiate team wrapped up the weekend by putting up a season-high score en route to a second-place finish in the team standings on Sunday (Recap). This Week: The RedHawks are idle until Jan. 5 when the senior team heads to the Cup of Berlin Classic.
Volleyball
Last Week: Miami (23-9 overall) competed in every set, but fell 0-3 (19-25, 16-25, 21-25) to No. 12 seed Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. (Recap) This Week: Miami's season is complete.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: The RedHawks (5-3 overall) earned a pair of victories last week in very different fashions. Miami exploded offensively to defeat Midway University, 123-40, inside Millett Hall on Wednesday. Several school records were broken or tied in this game. The 123 points scored by the RedHawks ranks as the most in program history, surpassing the previous mark of 114 set against Findlay in 1974. The 83-point margin of victory is also the biggest win ever posted by Miami. The previous record was 57, set in an 89-32 victory against Wright Field in 1947. The 34 assists the Red and White had beat the previous record of 31 set against Ball State in 1986 and Ohio in 1977. The 17 three-point makes beat the previous record of 16 set against Ball State in 2011, while the 48 total field goal makes ties the record previously hit against Findlay in 1974 and against Ball State in 1964. (Recap) The RedHawks earned a dramatic, 76-73, victory over Western Illinois in double overtime on Saturday. Junior guard Darrian Ringo hit the game-winning three-pointer with 0.7 seconds left just moments after the Leathernecks had tied the score with a three-pointer of their own. (Recap) This Week: The week starts on the road with a nationally televised game as Miami travels to Missouri to take on the Tigers Tuesday at 9 p.m. (EST). The game will air live on the SEC Network. The RedHawks return home this Saturday to take on Fort Wayne at 1 p.m. It is part of a doubleheader that will see the women's team take on Jacksonville State at 3:30 p.m. Both of those games will air live on ESPN3.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: Miami (4-3 overall) had just one contest this past week, a Sunday afternoon matchup with Canisius. The RedHawks topped the Golden Griffins, 72-47, for their third win in the last four games. It also kept MU undefeated (3-0) at home this season. Lauren Dickerson led all scorers with 22 points, her 17th-straight double-figure scoring effort dating back to last season. Kendall McCoy chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds off of the bench. The Red & White shot 55 percent from both the field and beyond the arc (Recap). This Week: Miami opens a two-game week on the road at IUPUI on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The 'Hawks return home on Saturday for a men's and women's doubleheader. The men kick off the day with a 1 p.m. contest against Fort Wayne with the women following at 3:30 p.m. against Jacksonville State.
Swimming and Diving
Last Week: Miami hosted the 24th annual Miami Invitational on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Miami women won the competition, finishing with 1480 points. The Miami men finished in third place with 762 points. Both the men and women had strong swims all three day, not only individually but also in the relays. The divers also competed at home, qualifying one woman for the finals each day and one woman and three men for the consolations each day (Recap). This Week: Miami is off from competition until after the holidays.
