TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Miami University volleyball team had all facets of its game working as it cruised to its sixth straight victory, 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-22) over Toledo Friday evening. The RedHawks improve to 15-7 overall and 7-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets fall to 10-11 overall and 5-4 in the MAC.
The Miami defense forced Toledo into 25 attack errors on the night as it hit only .031 for the match. A balanced `Hawks offense finished with a .364 attack percentage and was led by senior right side hitter Katie Tomasic with eight kills.
Senior libero Maeve McDonald recorded 19 digs to lead Miami and now has 1,982 for her career. She needs only 18 more to become the first RedHawk to hit the 2,000 career dig mark.
After falling behind 4-6 in set one early, kills from senior outside hitter Stela Kukoc and Tomasic helped get the Miami offense going. Two blocks from Tomasic saw the `Hawks increase their advantage to 12-8. Leading 12-10, four straight points for the Red and White made it a six-point lead and forced a Rocket timeout. The break did not slow down Miami as senior outside hitter Olivia Rusek, sophomore outside hitter Taylor Daignault and sophomore middle hitter Margaret Payne each put down kills to help make it 21-14. Kukoc, Daignault and Payne had final kills off assists from freshman setter Morgan Seaman to finish off a 25-16 win.
Set two was put away early as the RedHawk defense made a lot of great digs and forced several Toledo mistakes. The Rockets had eight attack errors in the first 17 points as Miami took an insurmountable 15-2 lead. Two kills from Payne, two service aces by Rusek and back-to-back kills from freshman outside hitter Sarah Wojick made it 23-5. Toledo would go on a 5-1 run, but a kill from Tomasic finished off a 25-10 victory.
Daignault, Tomasic and senior middle hitter Meredith Stutz each had kills off assists from redshirt junior setter Mackenzie Zielinski to help Miami take a 5-1 lead to begin set one. This time the Rockets did not lie down as they responded with an 8-1 run of their own to take a 9-6 lead and force a RedHawk timeout. Out of the break, kills from Rusek and Kukoc along with a UT setting error tied the score. The Rockets answered with four in a row before a 7-0 run put Miami in control at 16-13. Daignault put down a kill, while Stutz had a block and a kill to help push the advantage to five at 21-16. Toledo did not give up, answering with a 6-2 run to close to within one at 22-23. The RedHawks scored the next two in a row though, finishing off a 25-22 win with a block by Tomasic and Payne to take the match in straight sets.
Kukoc and Daignault had six kills apiece, while Rusek had five. Both setters recorded double-doubles for Miami. Seaman finished with 14 assists and 12 digs, while Zielinski had 11 assists and 13 digs. Stutz and Tomasic led the Red and White with three blocks each.
"Tonight's match found our team more in sync with our two-setter system," said head coach Carolyn Condit. "Morgan and Mackenzie ran a smart, balanced offense while on the defensive side of the ball we played hard and smart, scoring effectively in transition. Our serving was key in maintaining and keeping momentum."
Miami returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Ball State for a 7 p.m. match.
