RedHawks Fall on Last-Second Shot by Dayton, 64-63

DAYTON, Ohio -- University of Dayton's Kyle Davis connected on a basket with 2.1 seconds remaining to upend the Miami University men's basketball team 64-63 on Tuesday evening at UD Arena. Miami falls to 6-6 overall while Dayton improves to 9-2.

The teams went back and forth in the early stages of the first half before Miami pushed ahead to a 13-9 lead with 11:52 to go. Sophomore guard Zach McCormick pulled down an offensive rebound and tossed it back up and in for the bucket and sophomore guard Abdoulaye Harouna sunk a mid-range jumper to hand the RedHawks a four-point edge. The Flyers came back with a 5-0 spurt to claim a one-point edge, but a 3-pointer by senior guard Eric Washington put the RedHawks back ahead 16-14 by the 8:27 mark.

Washington collected his 10th point of the game off a jumper at 6:37 to hand Miami a 20-17 advantage.

A steal and breakaway dunk by Abdoulaye Harouna again pushed the Miami lead to four with just under three to play in the opening half, 25-21. The teams continued to slug away at each other over the remaining few minutes of the half, and Dayton knotted the game at 29 apiece, sinking a triple with 54 seconds to go. Sophomore forward Logan McLane nailed a long bucket, with his toes just over the 3-point line, with 21 seconds to play to send Miami into the half with a 31-29 edge.

The RedHawks shot 58.3 percent from the floor in the opening half, its best shooting effort in a half of this season.

The Flyers opened the second half on a 10-2 run and posted a 39-33 lead by the 17:13 mark. Dayton extended its lead to 10 points with just over 15 minutes to go, but a sophomore forward Rod Mills triple cut the RedHawk deficit to single digits about 20 seconds later. Again the Flyers extended their lead to double figures, posting an 11-point advantage. Miami fired back with a 5-0 spurt off another Mills trey and a layup by McKnight to close the gap to six points with just over nine minutes to go, 52-46.

A pair of free throws followed by a layup from Geovonie McKnight further cut the Dayton lead to four points with 6:29 to go, 54-50. Later, a senior forward Chris Bryant tip-in and another pair of free throws by McKnight put Miami within two, 56-54 with just over five minutes to go. Harouna flew down the floor and tossed in a layup to knot the game at 56-56 with 4:28 to play. Dayton came right back and hit a 3-pointer 16 seconds later to notch a three-point edge. Another UD trey at the 3:19 mark extended its lead to six points.

Washington found senior forward LJ Livingston Jr. on the ally-oop dunk and then came down and nailed a step-back triple before Harouna stole the ball and took it down the floor for a layup to give Miami a 63-62 edge with 1:35 to play. The RedHawks held the lead until Davis sunk a jumper with 2.1 seconds left.

Washington finished with 15 points and five assists to lead Miami, while McKnight added 12 points and Harouna finished with 11. Bryant notched a team-high seven rebounds for Miami.

Charles Cooke paced the Flyers with 21 points and nine rebounds. The RedHawks are off until after the first of the year when Miami hosts South Carolina State at 3:30 p.m. in the second game of a women's and men's basketball doubleheader.
