OXFORD, Ohio - Andy Greene was a leader both on and off the ice during his time at Miami and now he will be putting those skills to use as the New Jersey Devils' team captain as the 2015-16 NHL season gets underway.
In getting the captain's 'C' on his sweater, Greene, who is beginning his 10th NHL season in New Jersey, is the first former Miami hockey player to be named captain of an NHL team. The Trenton, Mich., native has played 559 games at the NHL level, including every game in four of the last five seasons. He has also logged 45 playoff games with New Jersey, 24 of which came during the Devils' run to the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals. Greene has recorded 171 career points on 31 goals and 140 assists in his NHL career.
Greene spent four years with the RedHawks from 2002-06, helping begin a streak of 10 NCAA Tournament appearances in a 12-year span that started his 2003-04 sophomore season. In 159 games at Miami, he put up 114 points on 27 goals and 87 assists. He was a two-time All-American, earning First-Team West All-American status during his 2005-06 season, when he helped the RedHawks win their second Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season title in program history. He was named the CCHA's Best Offensive Defenseman following both the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons and added CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman honors to his mantle in 2005-06.
The four-year Miami standout is one of seven former RedHawks who opened 2015-16 season on NHL rosters. He joins Dan Boyle (New York Rangers), Alec Martinez (Los Angeles Kings), Reilly Smith (Florida Panthers), Chris Wideman (Ottawa Senators), Tommy Wingels (San Jose Sharks) and Jeff Zatkoff (Pittsburgh Penguins).
