OXFORD, Ohio – Fifteen players on the No. 9/11 Miami hockey team recorded at least one point in Sunday’s 11-0 exhibition victory over Simon Fraser. The RedHawks’ win gives them a split of their home exhibition weekend.
Miami committed a pair of early penalties to give Simon Fraser a couple power plays, but the Red and White managed to kill both off. On the second man advantage, the Clan took a minor of their own just 31 seconds in, which opened the ice up for MU.
Midway through the first, the Red and White put some pressure on the Clan in their zone for consecutive shifts. It yielded a power play for Miami that produced a pair of quality shots, but ultimately no goal.
Alex Wideman finished a blue collar play to put the Red and White on the board with 6:42 left in the first period. The play began when Scott Dornbrock fired a shot from the high left circle that Andrew Parent turned aside. In a scramble for the puck, Blake Coleman dug it out from Parent and Wideman fired the puck into the open net for Miami’s first goal of exhibition play.
That goal appeared to open the flood gates for the RedHawks’ offense as Coleman blasted home a one-timer on the power play after Austin Czarnik and Wideman set him up in the slot at 15:31. After killing off a late Clan power play, Riley Barber created another MU man advantage with 39 seconds remaining in the period. It took just 16 seconds for Miami to connect for its second power play goal of the frame as Austin Czarnik blasted a slap shot from the point that went through traffic and in to make it 3-0 at the end of the first.
The RedHawks struck again 2:40 into the second when Kevin Morris crashed the goal and tapped in a rebound off Cody Murphy’s shot. Alex Gacek also earned an assist on the tally that made it 4-0 in favor of the Red and White. The pace appeared to slow down a bit as the period wore on, but the RedHawks erupted for three goals in the last 4:05. Czarnik started the onslaught by sniping the corner from a sharp angle after Coleman worked the puck across to him at 15:55, Coleman redirected Wideman’s attempt after Czarnik won a faceoff at 18:51 and Devin Loe hustled to corral Andrew Schmit’s blast and tap it into an empty net with 0.8 seconds remaining to give the Red and White a 7-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
It took only 24 seconds for Miami’s onslaught to continue as Sean Kuraly banged in a loose puck at the crease to make it 8-0. Anthony Louis and Matt Joyaux both drew assists on the play by starting the rush up ice. On another transition attack, Morris netted his second goal after Schmit redirected Trevor Hamilton’s outlet feed up the left wing at 6:31. Kuraly found the net for the second time in the period with 9:27 left after reached right and tipping Riley Barber’s centering feed just inside the right post. Murphy capped the scoring with 1:43 remaining when he one-timed Dornbrock’s pass from the right circle immediately after Dornbrock held the zone on a Clan clearing attempt.
The RedHawks outshot the Clan 57-13 overall and went 2-for-6 on the power play while holding SFU 0-for-4 with the man advantage. The line of Wideman (1 goal, 3 assists), Czarnik (2 goals, 2 assists) and Coleman (2 goals, 2 assists) combined for 12 points. The RedHawks also got multi-point outings from Morris (2 goals, 1 assist), Kuraly (2 goals), Murphy (1 goal, 1 assist), Dornbrock (2 assists) and Schmit (2 assists). Ryan McKay stopped all 12 shots that came his way before giving way to Anthony Jacaruso with 4:11 left. Jacaruso made one save to preserve the shutout.
Miami’s regular season begins on Friday when it travels to Bowling Green. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m.
