OXFORD, Ohio - With four Miami Hockey seniors already having signed professional contracts, three more joined the group as Alden Hirschfeld, Cody Reichard and Trent Vogelhuber all signed amateur try out contracts (ATO) over the last few days.
Hirschfeld (Sylvania, Ohio) inked an ATO with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League on March 29. The 6-foot-1 power forward joins former RedHawk and 2011 Hobey Baker Award winner Andy Miele in Portland, which is an AHL affiliate of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes. Hirschfeld will where No. 43 with the Pirates, who next play a pair of games at the St. John's IceCaps at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Hirschfeld played in all 41 games for Miami as a senior, totaling 24 points on 11 goals and 13 assists with the 11 goals tying for third on the team. He was a team captain in his final year and also Miami's CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominee. For his career, he played in 134 games, tallying 70 points on 35 goals and assists each. He posted a +12 rating this year and had a +42 rating for his career. Hirschfeld was an assistant captain as a junior when he recorded his lone career hat trick and notched eight game-winning goals while donning the red and white.
Vogelhuber (Dublin, Ohio) also signed an ATO in the AHL on March 29 as he came to terms with the Springfield Falcons, an affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets. The 6-foot-1 forward was drafted by the Blue Jackets in the seventh round of the 2007 NHL entry draft. Vogelhuber will don No. 38 with the Falcons, who next play at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Vogelhuber played in 39 games as a senior at Miami, recording 14 points on four goals and 10 assists. He posted a +7 rating on the year while being whistled for 18 penalties for 55 minutes. For his career, he played in 149 games while finishing with 51 career points, including 21 goals and 30 helpers. He had a +15 rating during his time at Miami and scored three game-winning goals, including one this past year.
Reichard (Celina, Ohio) completed his ATO agreement with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL (formerly East Coast Hockey League) on Monday (April 2). The Thunder is an affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks. Reichard was signed by the Thunder to serve as their backup goaltender in the ECHL Playoffs after Stockton netminder Thomas Heemskerk was called up to the Worcester Sharks of the AHL. The Thunder begins their best-of-five ECHL Playoff series Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the Colorado Eagles.
Reichard appeared in 21 games as a senior, making 19 starts while posting a 2.47 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. He compiled a record of 9-7-2 during the year while recording two shutouts. He was named CCHA Goaltender of the Month for November and won the CCHA's Ilitch Humanitarian Award this past year for his work with his foundation, Swoop's Stoop. Reichard is one of the most decorated netminders in Miami history as he compiled a career GAA of 2.10, which ranks third in school history, as does his .912 career save percentage. His 53 career wins are also third in program history while his 92 career games played rank fifth and his 1,894 saves are ninth on Miami's career charts. He pitched 12 career shutouts as well, which ties for second in school history. As a sophomore in 2010, Reichard was named CCHA Player of the Year, Second-Team All-America, First-Team All-CCHA and was a Hobey Baker Award finalist.
