CCHA Release: All-Conference Teams ![]()
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the second straight year, Miami University junior forward Reilly Smith earned First-Team All-CCHA honors, as the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced its all-league teams Wednesday. Smith is one of just two players to be a unanimous first-team selection in 2012, receiving first-place votes on all 10 ballots along with Michigan State junior defenseman Torey Krug.
By earning First-Team All-CCHA honors for the second straight year, Smith becomes the first RedHawk to do so since defenseman Andy Greene won it three times in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Smith is just the fourth RedHawk to ever earn first-team honors twice in their career, as Carter Camper ('11) was named First-Team All-CCHA in 2009 and 2011 and Dan Boyle ('98) did so in 1997 and 1998. Only six other Miami players have even earned first- or second-team honors twice during their career (Joe Cook, Bobby Marshall, Ryan Jones, Nathan Davis, Mitch Ganzak and Andy Miele). The RedHawks have now had at least one player chosen First-Team All-CCHA each of the last five years and one player named All-CCHA 10 straight seasons.
Smith (Mimico, Ont.) led the league in goals for the second straight year, potting 26 overall, which is second nationally, and 18 in league play (five more than anyone else). He has 38 points on the year in 34 games, which leads Miami and is second among CCHA players, while his 28 points in league play ranked third, just one point behind Krug and Notre Dame forward T.J. Tynan. He also has a +18 rating this year, which is seventh in the league. Smith closed the regular season on a career-long-tying four-game goal streak and season-long six-game point streak. He also became the 47th player in program history to record 100 career points earlier this season, as he now has 112 career points, which ties for 36th all-time at Miami.
Smith was a two-time RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month for November and January and was named CCHA Offensive Player of the Week four times during the year, more than any other player. The tri-captain was also named Inside College Hockey National Player of the Week Jan. 23 after a four-goal weekend vs. Western Michigan. He has eight game-winning goals on the year, which leads the country and ties Miami's single-season record, as he is also tied for second in career game-winners at Miami with 12. Smith tallied two hat tricks this year, the only CCHA player to do so, and has five multi-goal games on the season. He also has 10 multi-point games, including a career-high four points twice.
Joining Smith and Krug on the All-CCHA First Team are Tynan and Northern Michigan's Tyler Gron at forward while Ferris State defenseman Chad Billins is the other defenseman and FSU netminder Taylor Nelson is the first-team goaltender.
The All-CCHA Second-Team consists of NMU's Justin Florek, Alaska's Cody Kunyk and Ferris State's Jordie Johnston at forward, Western Michigan defensemen Dan DeKeyser and Matt Tennyson and Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick.
Miami senior goalie Connor Knapp (York, N.Y) earned Honorable Mention All-CCHA, as he earned the most votes among players not chosen to the first or second team. Knapp leads the country with a 1.53 goals-against average and is second nationally with a .939 save percentage. In league play, he finished first with a 1.41 GAA, which ranks fifth in CCHA single-season history, and .945 save percentage while posting a 10-5-0 record in 16 games (14 starts). All four of his shutouts this year came in league play, which is second in the CCHA. Overall, he has a record of 13-6-0 in 20 games (18 starts).
The All-CCHA teams were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches and are based on performance in conference games. Coaches voted for the top three players at each position with a first-place vote worth five points, a second-place vote worth three and a third-place vote worth one point. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. The Honorable Mention recipients are the next six highest point totals after the first and second teams were chosen, regardless of position.
