Miami Hockey Postgame Notes
With the 6-0 win, Miami improved to 7-3-0 over its last 10 games, including 6-2 in January. The RedHawks tied a season high for goals in a game, matching the six they put up against Providence on Nov. 25, 2011. The six-goal win was Miami's largest of the year, winning by four goals four times this season. Miami improved to 8-0-1 when scoring four or more goals in a game.
Senior goaltender Cody Reichard stopped all 16 shots he faced to tie David Burleigh ('03) for the Miami all-time record of 12 career shutouts. It was Reichard's second whitewash of the season and Miami's fourth shutout on the year.
Freshman forward Alex Wideman tallied the first multi-point and multi-goal game of his career with goals at 16:14 of the first period and 3:58 of the third period. His goal in the first period was the first game-winner of his career. The pair of goals brought his season total to three goals. His only other goal was Oct. 7, 2011 against Bemidji State, which was the season opener.
Junior forward Reilly Smith assisted on Wideman's goal in the first period to notch the 100th point of his career. Smith is just the 47th player in Miami history to reach the century mark for points in a career. He added a goal of his own on the power play at 1:10 of the third period, which was his CCHA-leading 19th of the season, as he is now tied for third nationally in goals scored.
The RedHawks earned their first win of the season against the Wildcats after falling in their three previous attempts. Miami fell, 2-1, at home Friday night and was swept Dec. 2-3, 2011 by scores of 2-1 and 5-1 in Marquette, Mich.
Miami scored twice on the power play Saturday in four chances, tying a season high for power play goals. It marked the fourth time this season the Red and White have had two power play goals in a game and the first time since the RedHawks did it against Providence on Nov. 25, 2011.
Freshman forward Blake Coleman assisted on back-to-back goals by Smith and Wideman at 1:10 and 3:58 of the third period, the first multi-assist game of his career. The assists extended Coleman's point streak to a career-long three games.
Senior forward Matt Tomassoni set a career high with two assists and tied his career high for points in a game with two, a number he has reached on four other occasions.
Sophomore forward Bryon Paulazzo tied a career high with two points Saturday on a goal and an assist. It was his third career multi-point game and second this year.
With two goals by Alex Wideman and one by freshman forward Tyler Biggs Saturday, the Miami freshmen have combined to score 32 goals this season, which accounts for exactly 40 percent of the team's 80 goals.
Miami improved to 13-5-1 this year when scoring first. The win also pushed Miami's record against ranked foes to 9-7-1 on the year as NMU was ranked 19th in the USCHO.com Poll.
