OXFORD, Ohio - Twelve former RedHawks who now play ice hockey professionally will return to Oxford Aug. 22-26 for Miami Hockey's inaugural pro camp, where they will have the chance to improve their skills on the ice that they once called home.
Among those scheduled to attend the camp are four players with NHL experience as well as five of six members of the class of 2011. New Jersey Devils defenseman Andy Greene ('06), Los Angeles Kings defenseman Alec Martinez ('09), Colorado Avalanche forward Justin Mercier ('09), who spent last year with the Avs' AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, and San Jose Sharks forward Tommy Wingels ('11), who played mostly with the AHL's Worcester Sharks in his first year, will all be participating in the camp. In addition to Wingels, Boston Bruins prospect Carter Camper, Phoenix Coyotes prospect Andy Miele, Vincent LoVerde, who plays for the Greenville Road Warriors of the ECHL, and Anaheim Ducks draft pick Justin Vaive will all represent the class of 2011 at the pro camp.
Also taking part in Miami's inaugural pro camp will be Minnesota Wild prospect Jarod Palmer and Brandon Smith of the CHL's Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees from the class of 2010. Joining Martinez and Mercier at the camp from the class of 2009 will be forward Gary Steffes of the CHL's Tulsa Oilers and Los Angeles Kings goaltender prospect Jeff Zatkoff.
The camp will be conducted by Miami's coaching staff of head coach Enrico Blasi, associate head coach Brent Brekke, assistant coach Nick Petraglia and volunteer assistant coach Brian Kaufman. During the camp, players will partake in skill sessions/stations, small area games, scrimmages and other drills from 1:15-4 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena each afternoon except Tuesday (Aug. 23), which has ice time slated to start at 7 a.m.
In addition to on-ice workouts, the players will be lifting each morning at the Gross Student-Athlete Development Center. An alumni dinner with current RedHawks will take place Thursday evening while a golf outing is also set to take place during the pro camp.
Spectators are welcome to watch the on-ice workouts at Steve Cady Arena each afternoon, except Tuesday, when players will be on the ice in the morning.
