SAGINAW, Mich.--For the second time this season, Miami had two players record double-doubles as the RedHawks defeated Saginaw Valley on Monday evening, 71-61. Sophomore guard Josh Sewell collected his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior forward Julian Mavungacompiled the 16th double-double of his career and second of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Cardinals scored on the opening possession, but the RedHawks rattled off 14 unanswered points using a balanced scoring attack over the first seven-plus minutes of the game. Miami opened up a 15 point lead by the 3:42 mark off a freshman guard Brian Sullivanlayup, 30-15. SVSU went on a 7-0 run to close within eight of the RedHawks with 1:15 to play in the opening half, but a pair of Sewell free throws with a second remaining pushed the Miami lead back to double-digits going into the half, 32-22.
Senior forward Julian Mavungapounded the boards, collecting nine of the RedHawks 25 in the opening stanza compared to Saginaw Valley's seven as a team. Turnovers and fouls hindered Miami in the first half but a 52 percent field goal percentage bolstered the RedHawks offensive efforts.
Miami extended its lead to 20 points in the second half on a bucket and ensuing free throw by sophomore guard Quinten Rollinswith 15:27 to play, 47-27. A Mavunga layup with 14:29 to play again put the RedHawks up 20 points, 49-29.
Saginaw Valley closed within eight with 2:08 to play, 62-54, but Miami pulled out the 10-point win.
The RedHawks shot 50 percent from the field for the game and tallied 43 rebounds.
SVSU was led by Chris Webb who had 19 points to lead all players.
