Prior to the game, Miami unveiled its 2011 CCHA Tournament championship banner after winning the program's first Mason Cup last year.
Miami was 2-for-5 on the power play after also going 2-for-5 in its exhibition game last Sunday and ranking third nationally with a 24.7 percent conversion rate last year.
Freshmen forwards Jimmy Mullin and Alex Wideman both tallied their first goals as RedHawks Friday, with Mullin's coming in the second period and Wideman's tying the game in the third stanza. In all, six freshmen saw their first ice time at Miami as Tyler Biggs, Blake Coleman, Austin Czarnik and Ben Paulides also suited up.
Miami's penalty kill was a perfect 2-for-2 Friday after ranking second nationally a year ago with an .882 penalty kill percentage.
With the loss, the RedHawks fall to 4-1-1 in their last six season openers, last losing a season opener in 2005 to North Dakota.
Miami lost its home opener for the first time since 2001 when the RedHawks lost to Merrimack as Miami had won nine straight home openers.
The RedHawks were outshot by the Beavers, 24-21, Friday. Miami was only outshot nine times all of last season.
Last season Miami was 16-7-4 when scoring first, but lost Friday despite notching the first goal.
Miami dropped its first home game of the season after going 13-3-2 last season at Steve Cady Arena.
Miami opened the season ranked No. 1 in the USA Today Preseason poll for the second time in three years.
Junior Reilly Smith did not play Friday because of a coach's decision.
