PORTLAND, Maine - Former Miami hockey standout Andy Miele has been called up to join the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League from the Coyotes' American Hockey League affiliate, the Portland Pirates, Pirates head coach Ray Edwards announced Friday. Phoenix, who is off to a 2-3-1 start to the season, plays its next game Sunday when it travels to Anaheim to face the Anaheim Ducks at 7 p.m. ET.
Miele has had a stellar start to the season playing for the Pirates in the AHL, notching an AHL single-game season-best five points Wednesday in Portland's 5-3 win over Manchester, scoring two goals and adding three assists. In four games for Portland, he leads the team with seven points on three goals and four assists.
While at Miami, Miele ('11) became the first RedHawk in program history to win the Hobey Baker Award while also being named First-Team All-America, CCHA Player of the Year, First-Team All-CCHA and CCHA Tournament MVP. He led the NCAA last year with 71 points and 47 assists and finished his career with 159 points, which is sixth in Miami history.
Miele signed an entry-level contract with the Phoenix Coyotes as a free agent on April 2 following his Miami career and practiced with the NHL club for the remainder of the 2010-11 season, but did not dress for any games.
