BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Sophomore guard Orlando Williams scored 14 points to lead four RedHawks in double figures, but it was not enough as Miami University's men's basketball team suffered a 62-53 loss at Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon.
Antonio Ballard added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Nick Winbush chipped in 11 points and five boards. Julian Mavunga tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven assists. The Falcons (7-10, 2-1) also had four players in double figures, led by A'uston Calhoun with 11 points.
Williams paced Miami (7-10, 2-1) in the first eight minutes, hitting a pair of threes that led to a 10-2 advantage and another basket shortly after. The RedHawks extended the margin to 17-8 on a Winbush three at the 12:24 mark, but Bowling Green took over from there. A 9-0 run evened the game at 17-all, then answered another Williams three at the 7:14 mark with 10 straight points to make the score 27-20 at the break. Included in the run was a Calhoun jumper put the Falcons up for good with 5:14 left.
Miami closed within three points with 17:51 to play, 29-26, off a Winbush layup and a pair of buckets from Ballard. The difference was four, 34-30 when the Falcons scored six in a row to push the lead to double digits for the first time, 40-30 with 12:26 to play.
The Falcon advantage reached 12, 46-34, by the midway point of the half when Miami mounted a challenge. Mavunga hit back-to-back jumpers and Winbush added a three to cut the gap to five, 46-41, by the 7:52 mark.
Less than a minute later, with the score 48-43, Bowling Green used consecutive baskets to start a 10-3 run that pushed the lead back to a dozen, 56-44 with just 2:21 to play. Winbush drained a trey with 1:21 to play to pull Miami within seven, 58-51, but that was as close as the RedHawks would get.
From there, Bowling Green hit four of five free throws to preserve the victory.
