Volleyball Sweeps Jacksonville State

NASHVILLE - The RedHawk volleyball team earned its first victory of the season with a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) over Jacksonville State Saturday morning at the Belmont Invitational. Miami is now 1-1 on the young season, while the Gamecocks fall to 1-1.
It was a good sign for the RedHawks early when Lisa Treadway recorded an ace on the very first point of the first set. Two kills from Colleen Loftus, along with kills from Jenn Caylor and Treadway helped Miami expand the lead to 9-3. Jacksonville State would get as close as 13-15, but a kill from setter Michelle Mangia, along with a double block from Loftus and Michele Metzler started a 6-1 run that made the score 21-14 and put the set out of reach. Miami won the set, 25-18, after the Gamecocks recorded a service error on the final point.
Set two was very competitive early as neither team could establish a lead of more than three points. With the score tied at 13, a double block from Cassie Farrell and Mangia, along with kills from Loftus, Mangia and Metzler were part of an 8-2 run that gave the RedHawks a 21-15 advantage. Jacksonville State scored five of the next six points to pull within two at 20-22. Miami responded by forcing the Gamecocks into an attack error, and closing the set out with kills from Caylor and Mangia.
Trailing 7-10 in the third set, a kill from Loftus and a double block from Metzler and Amy Raseman were part of a 4-0 run that gave the RedHawks the lead. A 10-6 run by Jacksonville State gave the lead back to the Gamecocks at 20-17. Kills by Raseman and Metzler, along with a service ace by Jackie Lang helped tie the match back up at 21. With the score tied at 22, Jacksonville State committed a service error. On the next serve, Cassie Farrell recorded a solo block to set up match point. Caylor then finished the 25-22 win and the 3-0 sweep with a kill.
Caylor led Miami with 10 kills, while Metzler contributed nine. Mangia had a very strong game as the starting setter, recorded eight kills, 27 assists, six digs and two blocks. Loftus led the RedHawks with 10 digs. Miami hit .232 for the match, while holding the Gamecocks to a .154 hitting percentage.
The RedHawks conclude play at the Belmont Invitational later Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. (EDT) match against Memphis. The match is the 1,000th of Coach Carolyn Condit's career as she will become only the 10th coach all-time to reach that mark while exclusively coaching NCAA Division I volleyball.
