BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Miami University baseball team put the tying run on third base with just one out in the ninth inning, but Buffalo was able to record the final two outs without allowing the run to score to defeat the RedHawks, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Amherst Audubon Field. The Bulls (22-26, 8-15 Mid-American Conference) also knocked off Miami (25-25, 10-13 MAC) Friday, giving them just their second series win ever over the RedHawks and fifth win all-time against Miami in 31 games.
UB starter Pierre Miville-Deschenes (4-6) picked up the win, throwing 7.0 innings while allowing two runs on five hits with seven walks and strikeouts each while Miami starter Tyler Melling (Bellefontaine, Ohio) suffered the loss (3-6), giving up three runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work with a trio of strikeouts. Reliever Kevin Crumb earned his fifth save of the season, tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
The RedHawks were out-hit 10-6 but left 12 runners on base, including at least one in all nine innings, as the Bulls issued nine walks and plunked two batters in the contest, but also fanned 10 RedHawks. Freshman first baseman Kevin Bower (Indianapolis, Ind.) had two hits and scored a run while junior shortstop Ryan Kaup (Chandler, Ariz.) also notched a pair of hits and tallied an RBI for Miami. All six RedHawk hits were singles.
An RBI single by Buffalo left fielder Bobby Pizzuto in the third inning opened the scoring but Miami answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to grab a 2-1 lead. Junior catcher Adam Weisenburger (Plymouth, Minn.) led off the frame with a walk, advanced to third on a single and scored on a sac fly by sophomore designated hitter Jordan Jankowski (McMurray, Pa.) while the 'Hawks registered the second run on an RBI single through the right side by Kaup that drove in Bower.
The Bulls regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as shortstop Jacob Rosenbeck started the inning with a double and scored when Kaup tried to double up a runner after lineout but the throw got away from Miami's first baseman. A two-out single by catcher Tom Murphy then plated the second run of the frame to put UB back on top, 3-2.
The RedHawks looked to even the score in the fifth as Weisenburger tried to come all the way home from first base on a deep base knock off the wall in left center by Bower, but Buffalo was able to relay the throw home in time to tag Weisenburger out at the plate, keeping UB up one.
In the top of the ninth, junior right fielder Adam Eaton (Springfield, Ohio) led off with a single, which continued his hit streak to 17 games, and made his way to third base with just one out, but Crumb induced an infield pop-up and a strikeout to strand the tying run at third base and hand Miami a 3-2 loss.
The RedHawks and Bulls finish up their three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m. back at Amherst Audubon Field.
