WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - For the second straight day, the Miami University baseball team fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning and again the RedHawks rattled off double-digit unanswered runs, spurred by a seven-run third inning, to earn the win, knocking off Yale, 14-10, Wednesday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Stadium in the RussMatt Invitational. With the win, Miami (4-7) evened the all-time series with the Bulldogs (4-1) at 2-2 and handed them their first loss of 2010.
The teams combined for 34 hits and eight errors, while 13 pitchers between the two sides took the hill. Yale committed six of the miscues, leading to four unearned runs for the RedHawks, but out-hit Miami 21-13, despite the loss, while leaving 12 runners stranded on base. Sophomore reliever Matt Rosinski (University Heights, Ohio) picked up his first-career win (1-0) in his first collegiate decision, tossing four innings and allowing two runs, while Yale starter Joe Castaldi (0-1) took the loss, giving up seven runs (five earned) in 2.2 innings. Sophomore Jordan Jankowski (McMurray, Pa.), who started as Miami's designated hitter, earned his first save of 2010, working the final two frames and allowing just a run with two strikeouts. It was his sixth career save, which moved him into the RedHawks' career top-10 list.
Every player on both teams who had an at-bat recorded a hit, as Miami was led by a 3-for-5 day from junior first baseman Kyle Weldon (Mason, Ohio), who also tallied two RBI and scored twice while junior second baseman Brad Gschwind (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman first baseman Cory Klenke (Coldwater, Ohio) also had a pair of runs batted in. Left fielder Charlie Neil paced the Bulldogs with four hits while third baseman Andy Megee had a game-high three RBI.
Yale jumped on Miami quickly, as the first five batters recorded hits, including a two-run shot over the fence in left field by Megee. The Bulldogs then made it 3-0 in the top of the first, plating another run on a double play. The 'Hawks answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a sac fly by junior right fielder Adam Eaton (Springfield, Ohio) and an RBI single by Weldon to make it a one-run contest after one.
Miami evened the score at three in the bottom of the second when senior left fielder Zak Hatfield (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly by Klenke. The RedHawks then broke the game open in the third, plating seven runs (all with two outs) on five singles as 11 'Hawks came to the plate, to make it a 10-3 ballgame. Yale got two runs back in the top of the fourth to close within five and made it 10-8 in the sixth with three more runs, the final two on a two-RBI single by first baseman Trygg Larsson-Danforth.
Junior catcher Adam Weisenburger (Plymouth, Minn.) then gave Miami a three-run cushion in the bottom of the sixth when he clubbed his second round-tripper of the season to left field. The Bulldogs again made it a two-run contest in the top of the seventh and looked to make it more but senior reliever Kyle Donawerth (Cincinnati, Ohio) forced Danforth to strikeout with the bases loaded, limiting Yale to just a run and keeping the score at 11-9.
An RBI groundout in the top of the eighth brought the Bulldogs within one, but the 'Hawks added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Eaton stole two of his career-high tying three bases on the day to help score the first run while Weldon and Jankowski hit RBI singles to put the score at 14-10.
Jankowski then closed out the game on the mound by forcing the Bulldogs to hit into their third double play of the contest, securing the RedHawk victory.
Miami finished with four stolen bases in the game and are now a perfect 18-for-18 on the season.
The RedHawks continue their spring break trip in Florida Thursday, March 11 with a doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational. Miami faces Rhode Island at 1 p.m. and will play Fairfield a half hour following the first game (approximately 4:30 p.m.), with both games being played at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
