Late Run By Dayton Downs Miami Saturday

Dec. 4, 2010

Final Stats

DAYTON - A late 10-0 run by Dayton would break open what had been a tight game, as the Flyers defeated Miami, 70-58, Saturday evening. Julian Mavunga led the RedHawks with 18 points, who fell to 3-5 overall. The Flyers improve to 6-2 overall.

Looking for a second win over a local rival this week after defeating Xavier, 75-64, on Wednesday, the RedHawks shot well until the latter part of the contest, finishing at 41.2 percent (21-for-51). Miami held Dayton to a similar shooting percentage at 44.4 percent (24-for-54), but the RedHawks were unable to overcome 21 turnovers.

Both teams came out willing to run to begin the first half. With the scored tied at seven, Mavunga hit two shots, while Antonio Ballard nailed a jumper as part of an 8-2 run that gave the RedHawks a 15-9 lead. Dayton answered with an 8-0 run of its own that gave the Flyers a 17-15 lead with 9:33 remaining in the period.

Dayton extended the advantage to 21-17 before Orlando Williams nailed a three-pointer that seemed to ignite the Miami offense. A jumper by Mavunga and a layup by Quinten Rollins put the RedHawks back in front at 24-23. Miami continued to push the tempo as Nick Winbush found Ballard for a layup that extended the advantage to six at 30-24 with 1:49 remaining. A 5-0 run by the Flyers would close the gap to one, but Mavunga hit a deep three-pointer with six seconds remaining to send the RedHawks into the break in front, 33-29.

Mavunga led Miami with 13 points in the first half, as the team shot 50 percent (12-for-24) for the period. The RedHawks outrebounded the Flyers, 17-10, during the frame.

Dayton opened the second half on a 12-6 run that put it in front, 41-39, with 15:42 remaining. The Flyers eventually pushed it to 45-39 as Miami went on a four-minute scoring drought. Mavunga ended that when he hit his second three-pointer of the game to make it 45-42 with 11:41 to go.

Trailing 51-44, Miami would go on an 8-0 run to regain the advantage. The key play came with the score 51-48 when a block by Winbush prevented an easy Dayton layup. Antonio Ballard was fouled on the rebound and hit one-of-two free throws to pull the RedHawks to within two. On the next possession, Chris McHenry hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to give Miami the lead back at 52-51 at the 7:26 mark.

A 10-0 run by the Flyers immediately following the RedHawks taking the lead would prove to be the difference in the game. Ballard would respond with a layup, as well as an old-fashioned three-point play that would get Miami to within four, but the RedHawks would not get closer as they fell, 70-58.

In addition to Mavunga's 18 points, Balllard had 17 points, while Winbush finished with 11. Ballard also led Miami with eight rebounds.

The RedHawks return to action on Tuesday when they host Saginaw Valley State at 7 p.m. in Millett Hall.
